Frequently Asked
Wheelchair

Q: How do the Air Free Wheelchair tires wear in comparison with pneumatic ones?
A: The Air Free Wheelchair tires can last twice as long as quality air inflated pneumatic tires and can last just as long as a foam filled pneumatic

Q: Will the Air Free Wheelchair tires stay on the rim?
A: Yes. All of our wheelchair tires are made for wheelchairs and are resistant to being pinched off of the rim.

Q: Can Air Free Tires damage my rims or spokes?
A: No. Since you more than likely have already been using either a foam filled or a urethane tire you already know this not to be the case.

Q: How do I know if Air Free tires will fit my wheels?
A: We sell wheelchair tires from the leading manufacturers and all of the tire we feature are standard equipment on some manufacturers chair. Odds are we have something to fit. If you are able to measure your rim then you may find you have several options. Also our rim database is a good starting point and we always welcome information to add to our database.

Q: What if I have a rim that none of your tires will fit?
A: If you measured your rim as per the instructions on our sizing page and the calculator said that none of tires will fit your rims, then we are sorry. Also if you used our database of rims and again no tire was found then we do not have a tire. However we are always working on new designs and will obviously target the more popular rims. Please email us your particular details so that we may expand our database and if we get something out in the future you will be the first to know.

Q: How much do Air Free tires weigh?
A: Depending on the tire you purchase, Air Free tires will weigh the same if not less than conventional tires (inner tube, tire, puncture resistant sleeve, compressed air). Of course if you are going to get a replacement tire then you already know.

Q: What are the PSI equivalencies?
A: Each tire has the PSI (pounds per square inch) shown. As you look over the collection you may notice that some tires have different PSI. This is because different tires have differing usages. Depending on your usage, you may require a PSI of a tire that is not shown. Some of our wheelchair tires can be customized and some cannot but any customization options will be present with each tire in the collection.

Q: What about rolling resistance?
A: If you are getting a replacement tire then the rolling resistance will be the same. If you are thinking about an upgrade or a higher performing tire than the one you have now, we will point that out with each individual tire.

Q: What is the difference between the High Resilient tires and the standard foam tires?
A: Only the Mako tires are available with the High Resilient option at this time.

Q: What about installation of the Air Free Tire?
A: Air Free wheelchair tires are a little harder to install than our bicycle tires and that is why we highly recommend getting the installation tool. The cords that run inside of each tire are different than the bike tires and have less of a stretch. Most of these types of tires are installed with a press at the factory level, however our tool can easily leverage them into place. We also offer to take the tool back once you are done with it.

Q: What if I need to return the tires?
A: This is never a problem. Typically, the only reason tires are ever returned, is because the wrong size tires were ordered. To make sure this doesn't happen to you, please be extra careful of the size of the tire you before you order. If you have any questions or are unsure of your tire size, email or call us. We will be happy to assist you.

Q: What other information is available to me to make an informed purchase decision?
A: The Air Free website is loaded with information and we add new information all the time. Some areas of good reading are:
The Air Free Tire and Test Data Center
The Air Free Information Headquarters which contain relevant information and professionally prepared articles
The "Ask Hugh" section which features the President of Air Free and some answers he has to more technical questions
And our Customer Service section will help make you feel good.
