Old Bicycle Tire Help Desk Questions and Answers

Greetings, for years we have been answering thousands of help tickets from customers all over the world. Here you can see that we can help a lot of people and sometimes we can't. These questions come from our old database and many of the links don't work. However, the information is still valid, so please enjoy.

Thank you

Hugh

Question: Message: Question< What does "TPI" mean in a tire selection? I see tires with 66TPI , 50 TPI, Etc. What does this mean and what is advised? Thanks, Jeff Elston

Answer:

that stands for Threads Per Inch and would have nothing to do with your selection of an airless tire. The TPI count has to do with the wire or copper threading present in rubber tires. Since ours are airless, this wouldn't apply. Hope this helped

Question: Message: If I were to ride a recumbent tricycle equiped with Airless Tires from Cleveland OH to San Diego CA, would the tread be worn to the point of needing to replace the tire?

Answer:

Depends on the total weight and road conditions and the density of the urethane. But for practical puposes, it sounds doable. You can get anywhere from 1,000-6,000 miles with our tires but it depends....

Question: Message: I can not find a air free tire in kids size 18" i see 12 the 16 the it goes to 20. We recently bought my son a bike with 18 inch rims i did not think it would be difficult to find airless tires for that size. Can you help maybe you make them or possibly you could advise how i could convert a 20 inch by cutting off 2 inches. Any help you can give would be great

Answer:

sorry but we don't offer an 18" tire and no one we know makes an airless to fit. There will be replacement rubber tires and sometimes they can hard to find. Ace Hardware, Walmart being the best bet as the 18" tire won't be found in a lot of bike shops yet because most of the bikes with the 18" wheels come from Walmart. Check with a bike shop you may have enough clearance to install a regular 16" or 20" wheel on the bike and then tires won't be hard to find.

Question: I received this package via UPS from Nu-Tek. I'm certain it's because of your efforts. I must thank you. They did omit the installation tool (700C x 25), but Nu-Tek doesn't offer a package as you do where the tool is included with the purchase of 2 tires...nor do they offer the nice pricing package either. I purchased a pair from Nu-Tek when things got confused with our original order for my homeless buddy and his can gathering bicycle. Even now I have to say that your specials are around 15% cheaper than going directly to Nu-Tek, so I'm doubly impressed. I hope your efforts continue to bear good news. I'm so personally grateful that I'd be glad to offer a personal testimonial, especially to those whose difficulties mirrored my own so that you may restore much of the simple confidence with your clients. Should an additional statement regarding the success of your efforts be needed for the BBB-Central Florida, I'll be happy to add a personal note.

Question: Message: I'd ~~LOVE~~ to purchase 3 of your Air Free tires, but I cannot find the right size here on your Website. Since I'm a paraplegic I ride a hand-crank tricycle (Freedom Rider). The front tire is 26 x 1.5 (rim sizes 559 x 17). The two back tires are 26 x 1 with rims designated as (559). I keep these tires just as hard as I can so it's a wee bit easier to crank. 120 psi minimum. It's goathead thorn season here in the Rocky Mountains (very nasty things) and I sure would like to not worry about those evil little devils ever again. Can you help me out here? Brendan

Answer:

sorry none of our tires will fit your rims as you use racing rims and our 26" tires are designed to fit wider recreational type rims. No one else makes tires for real thin rim in the 26" class. If you can change wheels and go to a wider rim like the Alex DM24, we could get you the Rainier 26 x 1.5 HR tire (isn't on our website anymore but we can still get them). Otherwise maybe look at going to a 700c (larger diameter) rim. Your front rim 559x17 is the rim size inside of the rim, so none of our tires will fit. the back ones are probably close. But to be sure, use the quicksize at www.airfreetires.com/quicksize

Question: Message: Dear sir, My bike wheels are MAVIC 6106. I am a big man and suffer a lot from flat tires. I need two tires for road and off road. I would like to know: 1. Do you need the dimention of the wheel or MAVIC 6106 is enough ? 2. What kind of tire do you recommend for a big man that often rides with heavy load (long trips) 3. What would be the cost to send these tires to Israel ? 4. can I pay with cash ? Thank you, Roy Alony

Answer:

I apologize for the delay. The Monaco tire http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-86-700-x-28-monaco-performance-touring-622.aspx  at 120 or 140 psi would be your best choice. The Mavic rim you mention isn't in our database so it would be good if you could measure the interior of the rim http://www.airfreetires.com/sizing/TireSelector.asp

None of our tires would really suit you for off road as the performance starts to degrade with loads over 200lbs, however we have had some customers get the tires at very high psi and be happy with them. The Monaco I know will work the best for your street riding. The cost to Israel is $40.00 for two tires and tool a little less with out the tool.

Question: Message: I'm a retired chemical engineer and am always looking for items to study to keep my mind active. I'm interested in tire design criteria for all types of tires. Please let me know where I can locate this type of information. Many thanks in advance.

Answer:

there isn't much airless tire info except for the manufacturer hyperbole. We talk quite abit about these tires on our website and we have the most objective eye of all the airless tire sellers. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/Information/

What we need as an industry are urethaanes that more acturately imitate the characteristics of rubber tires. However the performace attributes of a mountain bike tire and street bike tire are completely different. Both will have different crr, footprints, rates of recovery and durometer. There are several classes of tires that share general characteristics that we wish to copy. Bayflex has a suite of products that look interesting. If you want to help then please ask how.

Question: Message: Hugh, How do you remove an airfree tyre? They look hard to get on, so they must be really hard to get off! I am considering these for my touring bike/commuter (recumbent) I will be looking for a fast 26" tyre, with minimal tread. I usually use conti top touring. I also ride comp pools on my 20" recumbent.. so I like a fast tyre on my fully suspended bike (hence harsh ride is not such a problem. However should the unimaginable total failure occur, I need to be able to mount a pneumatic tyre. (On tour in Australia I generally carry a spare tyre, at least a tube, and very full patch kit, totalling about 700g so the complaints about a 'heavy' airfree set are minimal from me as I would be carrying less!) Regards, Tom

Answer:

putting the tire on is fairly easy with the tool however I don't think we will have any thing for your 26" tire needs. All of our 26" tires are for MTB kind of use. We don't anticipate making any 26 x 1 or 26 x 1.5 for another year. We do have tires for the 700c however. Give us a little while and we'll have something for you. In the meantime please take a look at the tires we will make.

Question: Message: We bought our son a Mongoose [Bigdaddy] bike. He dented the back rim that came with the bike. So we have two different style of rims. The rim we bought is a Alex MX22 and the other rim came with the bike. My question is,what kind of tire do we need and will the same kind of tire fit on both style of rims.

Answer:

The Rocky Mountain Roadster Wide will fit that rim if it is a 24" rim like I think it is. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-110-24-x-20-rocky-mountain-roadster-wide-507.aspx  It really isn't meant for stump jumpin but for light to moderate riding. (No tricks) To see if any of our tires will fit the rims with out having to remove the tire, please see www.airfreetires.com/quicksize

Question: Message: Hi Hugh, How does the suspension feel compared to the air tiresDo you need to have a shock absorbing seatpost or shock absorbers at the axles. What is the usable life and what is the indication that you need new tires ?Do you have Australian agents ? We have a bush that drops buds or spiky balls that are deadly for bike tires so haven't used a bike for a while !!!! Tnx Graeme

Answer:

depends on the tire. Some of tires are very hard and some are soft. Little spike balls won't hurt the tire and typically our users haven't had to put pillows under their bums. Tire life is weight and condition dependant. If you weigh a lot and ride on rough roads then the tire may only last 3000 miles. If you don't weigh a lot and stay on smooth roads then we have customers who have gotten 10k miles but most will see something in between. You need new tires when the skin of the urethane wears off, and it will be obvious when it happens. Hope this helped.

Hugh

Question: Message: Dear Mrs, I need a tire for a big wheel prototype bicycle, Thanks in advance for your next replay, The wheel is a multi-layer wood laser-cutted of 1254 mm diameter, 15 mm Thikness; I projected to apply an Alluminum Rim with "U" section of 25 mm Width and 2,0 mm of Thikness and 10 mm Height; I can send you The DWG Drawing of the Rim; the internal diameter of the Rim is 51" 1/2 I am Located in Italy, 40 Km N-E from the Linate Airport of Milan... I look forward to earing from you Best Regards

Answer:

to make a tire that large using our process will be expensive. ($10,000 US) There are other ways to make a prototype tire. Machine two mold halves out of plastic and use a urethane sneaker material (low exotherm) or you can use tubing like they used to in the old days. If you have a representative here in the states, please feel free to have them contact me.

Hugh

Question: Message: I need to know what the weight limits are on your wheel barrow tires. I am making a cart for my arch welder and it's weight is about 287 lbs. I plan on using two tires for the cart. Will these tires support that much wieght. If not can you suggest a tire that would. The welder is a gas powered portabe welder. Thanks Harold

Answer:

the Low Profile tire can take 400lbs per wheel and the Regualr profile can take 500lbs per wheel. Please see

Question: Message: Hi, we own a "Baby Jogger I" with 16 inch wheels. The tires say "16 X 1.75". In your experience have you found that your 16" tires work with this model? We're thrilled at the prospect of not having to pump up and fix the tires on the jogger every time we go out - in Colorado, thorns thwart the use of the jogger regularly... thanks for your time, Sincerely, Ben,

Answer:

We haven't found any 16" wheel joggers that our tires didn't fit. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-16-16-x-175-pocono-safety-tire-305.aspx To double check the fit, follow the instructions at www.airfreetires.com/quicksize Please let me know if I be of help.

Question: Message: Thank you for your 5% off offer. I am very interested but hope you can help me make sure I order the proper tires for my road and mountain bikes. I am strictly interested in road riding for both bikes. I have a Trek 2200 with ZIP303 rims and am currently using 700x23 tires. Would the Legacy Daytona TT 700x20 or the Legacy Performance Touring 700x28 work for my bike. If not what would? My moutain bike is a Giant Yukon with standard rims and I am currently using 26x1.95 tires. I was considering the Legacy Teton All Terrain 26x20 tires. What I want is smooth riding tires, I don't need larger treads since there will be little if any off road riding. Thank you, Ron Self

Answer:

The Daytona or Monaco tire will work on your street bike. The Tetons are recreational grade, so if you plan on taking long trips with the mountain bike, the Teton could make it a little harder to pedal. The street tires won't have that. If you like a little wider tire, the 700 x 28 Monaco is a good tire.

Question: Message: can u tell me if i can just put a new tub in back tire of my like yahama scooter, gas 49cc.instead of removing hole tireany time

Answer:

sorry we only sell airless tires for bicycle and wheelchair and the like.

Hugh

Question: Message: do you make anything to replace tubular glue on tires?

Answer:

Sorry, our tires will only fit the clincher style rims.

Question: Message: I was referred to you by a satisfied customer. I am awaiting the arrival of my first (adult) bicycle which I aim to use for my daily commute. I don't know a lot about bikes just yet, so I am looking for some expert advice regarding tire purchasing. Since my household is trying to give up our dependance on gas powered vehicles, I expect to be doing much more business with you in the future if this first purchase suits our needs. I have a 20' folding bicycle. It weighs 40lbs. I weigh 240. I will be commuting to work every day on this bike in Pittsburgh, PA, which has lots of weather. It rains, snows, and sleets, sometimes all on the same day. I live on top of a hill that is hard for cars to navigate in winter. Yes, I am aware that I am out of my mind, but I plan on riding (or walking) my bike up that hill in all but the very worst weather. I need tires that can stand up to the incredible demands that I am making. Which of your products do you suggest? I appreciate your help with this. I really hope that your tires are as great as I have heard. I would love to outfit all of our bikes with them, and to have some spares set aside.

Answer:

The Catalina may fit but please follow the instructions found at www.airfreetires.com/quicksize . Be aware that our tires don't fit all rims because the width of the rim varies from rim to rim. If the Catalina will fit, then get them customized to at 125psi and try them out. Ice and sleet kinda scare me so if you use our tires and it gets slippery you may need to opt for the rubber tire with a lower psi until spring time. Most of our tires poop out when more than 200lbs is involved so getting them customized is our work around. However if these tires don't work good enough we have some high resilient elastomer tires that we can get. Please call me if there is anything I can do for you.

Hugh

Question: i am so sorry. but i was going to make a project on how to make a 0% waste in the process, and what are the mechanisms in the reaction, and also i need a simple flow-diagram only for the mixing ingredient process. i also need the list of ingredient and what other chemical ungredient such as catalyze. this project is under university of sceince malaysia.

Answer:

sorry I can't help as I am not the technical person. Any process that mixes a two part thermoplastic urethane (isocyanate A + B) will be similar. Please do not confuse our process with one that is more complicated. Ours is very simple mix, dispense and spin. You should be able to find good information about mixing urethanes. You could almost mix by hand but some in our industry use large 12 station carousels and some use single station machines. We don't make tires here, only sell them. try kiktire.com or nu-teck.com and see if they can help you as they actually make tires.

Hugh

Question: Message: Do you sell glow-in-the-dark tires? I'd be interested in buying glow-in-the-dark tires from you and selling them to bike manufacturers. Have you ever looked into this type of a product? I believe that if we do sell them, then people won't need reflectors and they'll be safer. I think that this is especially useful for wheelchair users because they need even more protection than the rest of us. I figure that if we buy some pigment from glowinc.com, then mix it in with the tires, the extra cost should be very minimal. As it is, I assume that you put some kind of pigment in there already. Thoughts? Questions? -- Sincerely, and with thanks, Eugene

Answer:

I'd like to put you in charge of this. First, we spin the molds at 400 rpm while the urethane is is being poured in. any thing with a higher specific gravity than our mix will be slung to the periphery. If it were as simple as putting in a glow pigment it may have already been tried. Urethane is bone white without pigment. Will people want white tires? I agree that a lit tire is a good idea. Some urethanes can cure clear meaning the possibility of a light system in the tire is possible but the performance of the tire may suffer. Help us develop a tire and wheel system that lights up. I hope it is as simple as pigment.

Hugh

Question: Message: I am looking for a airless tire for a Greenspeed Trike http://greenspeed.com.au/solo.htm GTC 16/16 Compact Touring Trike with Wheels 16" x 1 3/8" (37-349) alloy I ride a regular bike in the Mojave Desert using American Airless tires but cannot find a 16 x 1 3/8 inch. I am planning to take the trike to Mongolia and do not want to fool around with flats. Do you have something avaiable? David

Answer:

sorry no 349 tires. We have one on the drawing board, please see    We can't help you now, but one day we hope to. Good luck on your ride.

Hugh

Question: Message: I am looking for solid tire stock (Air Free Tire stock) that I can purchase by the linear inch or foot. I am building a custom made unicycle with a rather large diameter (close to 52") wheel. The rim I am manufacturing myself. If this works, I may need a supplier for tire stock. I plan to use the age old methods (Boneshaker Unicycle) to join the ends. Please, if you can help me out, or know of a company that carries this type of stock, please let me know. Thanks, John

Answer:

sorry, our tires are made in one peice and are stretched into place. What you want is the old fashioned extrusion fused together. Try www.cokertire.com and I know of some ordinary bikes and pennyfarthings that have gone back into production. I don't know where you can get this extrusion but I know it should exist.

Hugh

Question: It couldcost $400Message: hello i am a new company trying to obtain solid tires for moblity scooters. the most common sizes are 3.00/4, 3.50/5. could give me prices and shipment cost to the uk, i would order 10 off each @ a time.p.s how long would it take to ship to uk?. many thnks for taking the time . Mick.

Answer:

you have four choices, Duratrap, Rib Tire, Knobby Wide and Knobby. These are foam filled rubber tires and are the industry standard here. They range from $48-$51 each. Shipping is weight specific and tires may come in several small boxes. It could cost $400 to get the tires to you.

Shipping overseas is pricy. Why don't you let me show you how to foam fill tires yourselves when the time is right?

Hugh

Question: Message: Hugh, Bought a set of Daytona TT 700mm @145 psi. Install went without a hitch but I appear to be going 3 to 4 MPH slower than I was on my inflatable tires. I read the section on footprinting and I believe that might be my problem, since tires with small footprints are sometimes slower than tires with bigger footprints. What can I do to improve performance.I am 220 lbs. Robin

Answer:

typically airless tires will be a little slower than the rubber tire equivalent. However sometimes when the tire isn't seated properly or the rider weighs over 200lbs the rolling resistance can go up. If your rim is thinner than 14mm wide that may have something to do with it too. Sorry for the slowness but that really is all we have for that size at this point. We are working on making faster compounds. If the tires are unacceptable, then please feel free to send them back. What is the make and model of your rim?

Hugh

Question: Message: I use my bike every day to commute to work and back and on weekends just because it's fun. after having a couple of flats (thankfully not on my WAY to work), I've started leaving a half hour earlier. It bites! I have a hubby with Parkinson's and now heart problems as well. I cannot afford to have a flat tire at any time. I am 48 years old. When I was 42, I was 50 pounds heavier than I am now. I got into weight training which I absolutely love but need more. I love my bike but I NEED more reliability. I have read on some internet threads that airless tires will mess with my rims. Is this true? I NEED a reliable bike. I suppose I COULD drive a car but we only own one and hubby is handycapped so he needs it more. AND I REFUSE to have one of my own. I have a dahon Helios XL with Alexrims A16. Please help me with a superior city flat free tire!

Answer:

Sorry. we can't help as our tires won't fit the Alec DA-16 rim. We are working on new designs. Airless tires don't break rims, flimsy rims break rims and rims with rubber tires break all the time. Airless tires are used by millions of people, many of whom weigh quite a bit and are tough on thier wheelchairs and they live in them. Airless tires don't break wheels or we would have been out of business a long time ago. Most likely, the bike shop doesn't have any real experience and is speaking from an anecdotal perspective.

We may be able to foam fill the tires on your exisitng rim or you can get another set of rims that our tires will fit. Those are the options at his point.

Question: Message: Hello Air Free tire, I am in the process of designing a custom unicycle, and I am in need of a very special tire. Ideally the tire would be air free with a diameter of 52 inches. I know that this is way out of the ordinary bicycle tire dimentions, so it would be a custom build, but I also know that it is possible. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Drew

Answer:

sorry we don't have such a beast yet. We were talking with another company to produce tires for Penny Farthings but that is a big tire to make from our manufacturing perspective. Some Penny Farthings have gone back into production and they will use a safe clamped on tube 52, 54 and 58 inches in diameter. I don't know who has them but I do they are coming.

Hugh

Question: Message: Hugh, I ride my mountain bike for most of my transportation needs, as well as my biking fun needs. I am looking for a truly tubeless/airless tire like the ones we had on our tricycles as children and a 5-spoke alloy rim so that is will last me the life of my bike. I ride a 24-speed Trek 4200 with disk brakes, and front suspension. The streets of Seattle have become absolutely nightmarish because of construction debris, and other road hazards that are nearly invisible at night, which is when I need my bike for transportation to and from work, and during work. Maybe I am looking for something that does not exist for my needs or my bike, could you please tell me if I am barking up the wrong tree? Thanks; David

Answer:

please see www.airfreetires.com/quicksize to see if we have something to fit. Our airless tires and the old tricycle tires are quite different. The trike tire is made of rubber, hollow and heated and stretched on to the wheel. The airless tire is urethane, not hollow and a lot more comfortable.

Let me know what the quicksize says because if we don't have a tire to fit we may be able to foam fill your tires. One of our manufacturers is located in Seattle and is getting ready to try and foam fill quality pneumatics. If you don't mind being on the cutting edge of science we might have something for you.

Hugh

Question: Message: I have a recumbent trike and I am using your Catalina Freestyle tires. I have been advocating on your behalf on one of the recumbent trike message boards and one of the guys sent you a question and your response indicated that you did not feel the Catalina Freestyle was a good choice for recumbent trikes. Have I made a mistake? Is there some saftey issue I should be aware of? What do you suggest I do at this point?

Answer:

the Catalina was designed to run one in front of the other and not side by side. I have answered questions about this in the past based on our computer modeling in that a side by side tire would be lower in profile. To see an example:

We haven't had any Catalinas come off the rim, but putting a one in front of the other tire in a side by side application will assuredly have some drawback at some point. It's not the ideal tire for your application but it does work.

Please tell me about your trike, the way you ride, your rims and the tires you use to use.

Hugh

Question: Message: I'm running Weinmann ZAC 19-559 rims on a heavy electric bike. Currently the rims are fitted with Kenda 26 x 2.10 tires. When I run this rim through your database, my only option is the Silva wheelchair tire. I want to minimize rolling resistance, so I'd like to use the equivalent of 120 psi. Do I have any other options? Or do I need new rims?? Thanks, Bill

Answer:

sorry, we just don't have any tires to fit the Zac 19 at this time. You can however choose the "more information" link with each tire to see a list of rims that we know will work. I know its' a pain but we can't get the manufacturers to make new designs for the thinner rims but we do have some good rim and tire combos like the Rainier HR tire and Velocity Psycho rim (about $90.00 each) for commuting. This would be our lowest crr option.

Hugh

Question: Message: My wife and I have a tandem bike with 26 x 1.50 tires whic we normally inflate to 65 lbs. Woudl your airless tires provide a similar stiffness to this inflation rate? We ride both on and off road on this bike and have had numerous flats which I would like to avoid if I could utilize your product.

Answer:

The only tire I can recommend for a tandem is the Rainier Aqua Glider at 90psi. But it may not fit your rim because it requires a wider rim than most. Please see www.airfreetires.com/quicksize Otherwise we sell the Velocity Psycho rim which fits the Rainier and makes for an excellent rim and tire combo. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-61-26-x-15-rainier-power-glider-559-premium.aspx

Question: Message: I am interested in the Legacy Daytona TT - 700 x 20. My rims are Macic CXP21 and those are the recommended tyres. The website says I can install using tyre levers but the sales link offers the installation tool as well. So what's the deal? Is it easy to install without the tool and do you have instructions with images as you do for the tool? You do have a distributor in Australia? Mick

Answer:

I see you ordered. We are going to send the tires with out the tool so I took $10.00 off of the order and may adjust it again after we ship. We are going to redo the shipping on the website and in the future we will show prices delivered with and with out the tool. The tires will be fairly easy to install with tire levers and will become very evident how to install them as you begin.

thanks for your order and please let me know if you really want the install tool other wise you really don't need it.

Hugh

Question: Message: Which of your tires would best suit my conditions: 1. I weigh 215 lbs. 2. My present tires are 26 x 1.75 (ETRTO 47-559). 3. I live in the desert where summer temperatures can reach over 120 degrees F. 4. I do not ride very much, but want to start a weight loss program so I am intending to ride more. 5. The last two sets of tubes I had placed in the present tires did not last very long. Another reason for not riding more. I will be wanting two tires along with your installation tool. Thank you, Monte

Answer:

Dear Monte,

thank you for your interest. Please use the QuickSize located at www.airfreetires.com/quicksize to find out real fast which of our tires will fit your rim. If we have any to fit, they will be shown, if not then you can send the details to me to look over and I might still be able to do something. Please feel free to call me  if I can be of help.

Hugh

Question: Message: Hello, I am looking for an airfree tire (or 2) that can hold up to about 300lbs per tire. I need an off road because this would be a cart that will be pulled behind a mountain bike. I am needing the 20x1.75 size. Can you suggest a PSI for me? Or a specific tire that will hold the weight? Thank you, Dawn

Answer:

Our Mohave BMX High Resilient could handle the weight. But I worry about it going off road with so much weight, that the tire can come dislodged if you hit a rock or something wrong. You may want to consider having a set of tires foam filled instead. We don't do that put there are a number of places that do. Please let me know if I can help.

Hugh

Question: Message: How many miles could one expect to get on an air free tire? Generally I ride on paved asphalt or concrete, but sometimes on gravel or crushed rock bike paths. Since the tread wears down over time, at what point does the tire need to be discarded?

Answer:

Dear Louis,

The Air Free tire can be ridden for 3-6000 miles depending on your weight. At some point you will wear through the skin of the tire and expose the softer interior. It will be obvious then the tire will need to be replaced. The rougher the road and the heavier the rider, the quicker the tire will wear.

Also, sorry but no dealers in Plantation at this time.

Hugh

Question: Message: Dear Air Free: I put between 2,500 - 2,800 miles on my road bike each year. I had never heard of airless tires before today. What is the life expectancy of the tires and what would any drawbacks be for me? Sincerely, Jay

Answer:

thank you for your inquiry,

most airless tires will last over 3000 miles. The two tires that would suit you best are the Daytona and the Monaco tires. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/c-16-700c.aspx
the drawbacks may be that the airless tire will be slower than high quality pneumatics. Of course this only matters if you do long distances so the tire is better suited for commuters. For some testing, please see http://www.airfreetires.com/technical/TestingTires.asp  Please feel free to try the tires as they come with a money back, even if you've ridden them. Also we have a sale this month. Hope this helped.

Question: Message: What is range of tire width that fits 20x1.5 rims? For example, can a 20x1.95 tire fit 20x1.5 rim?

Answer:

yes, rubber tires are interchangeable. Airless tires, however will need to fit snugly into the rim. If you are considering an airless tire, please measure the rim using our quicksize here. www.airfreetires.com/quicksize

Question: Message: Dear Airfree tires, I was wondering if your Daytona TT 700c tires fit on Velocity Spartacus pro wheels. Thanks for your time. My Cell phone is . Rod

Answer:

Thank you for your inquiry. The Daytona TT tire will fit the Spartacus wheel because it uses the Deep V rim, which is one of the rims we recommend for use with our tires. Good choice.

Question: Message: I am looking for a 13-5.00-6 with a 5/8 diamiter axel. The hub is 2.25 inches but sticks out one side and not the other. I looked at a no flat at my local hardware store and they had tires for wheel barrows, but the hub was equal distince on each side. The hub has to protrude on one side only. The wheels (I need 2) are for a dump cart that I haul around behind my riding lawn mower. Can you help??? Sam Rudder

Answer:

your hub is either an "off-set" or a "centered" hub. An off-set hub will have two equidistant flanges from a center that is not exactly the center of the wheel. In your case I believe you have a centered wheel but with one of the flanges being cut off and a bearing stuck in. Please verify as an offset hub in the 13" doesn't exist from any of our suppliers and it isn't unusual to take a hack saw a chop a bit off of a normal hub. If thats the case then we have plenty of choices. Just order any 13x6-6 with the standard hub and cut what you don't need off. Please let me know and I can then tell you your choices.

Question: Message: Hi, I own a zero turn mower which has 23 x 9.5 - 12, 4 ply drive tires on it. Can you tell me what each set of numbers represents? I.E.: "23", "9.5", "12", etc... Thanks, Scott

Answer:

yes, the 23 refers to the height of the tire. The 9.5 is the width and the 12 is the rim diameter. You got big wheels, but we don't have any that big. We do have all the deck tires, 410/340-4, 11x400-5, 9x3.50-4, pneumatic and airless with hubs for Yazoo, Toro, Dixie Chopper, Ariens, Snapper and more. Big giant warehouse of tires and we are getting ready to put them on the website. So please keep us in mind for your next set of tires.

Question: Message: I ride a recumbent commuting through all kinds of weather. How do your tires handle both extreme cold and high heat + high humidity? How about rain & snow? Thanks for your help.

Answer:

Dear Grant,

Thank you for your inquiry.

All of our tires aren't bothered by temperature extremes. Wet dry traction is comparable but we think there are very few tires suitable for riding in the snow. The best tire we have is the Rainier AG HR please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-61-26-x-15-rainier-power-glider-559-premium.aspx  and if that tire can't fit your rim, we sell a rim that it does fit. We really don't have a good HR tire for the 20" front yet but if you really needed a rear tire, the Rainier or Ocelot HR tires will work. If you use a 700c, then the Daytona or Monaco will work.

Question: Message: Can you Mfg a Tire with a 8" width and flat bottom that can fit on a standard rim?

Answer:

Dear Michael,

Thank you for your inquiry. Yes we could make a wide tire to fit a standard rim, but I worry that it may look cool but not work well. The reason being is for every tire we make we need to maintain a hieght - width- aspect ratio in relation to the rim. Such a wide tire could only work in a straight line. I would guess, you want to make a bike tire look like a motorcycle tire? Please contact me if you wish to go over some ideas or you have a drawing and I can help you determine the best way to go about getting a tire made.

Question: Message: i have 2003 permobil chairman entra, and i need to replace the rear casters. the size is 200x50. the width at the bearing is 1 & 1/8 inches. the axle is around 17/32 in diameter. i got these dimensions from permobil so i'm taking yheir word for it. these are the solid rim type and i have no way of just replacing the tire. i would like to know if you can supply me with a replacement with split rims so i won't be in such a perdiciment again, i'm in hawaii, and our time is two hrs later than calif. time. my phone no. is 808=247-5921 and i"m ret. so i can be reached most anytime.

Answer:

Dear John,

Please take a look at http://www.affordableoption.com/casters 8.html and tell me what wheel on that page best resembles what you currently have. We have split hubs but I can't find any thin enough to fit a 1 1/8" axle width. You may need to replace the caster with a one piece hub. These casters are fairly cheap so you shouldn't worry that you need to replace just tires. The price on most one peice casters with urethane tires are about 20 bucks. Let me know which wheel you see you like, I can get any wheel they have and more, its' just they have them on the web and we don't yet.

Question: Message: I am interested in the "Air Free" tires for my personal bike. I have a hybred bike. My wife and I are in our early 60's and ride mostly paved bike trails. My concern is that I have heard that eruathane tires do not have as good a traction as rubber tires. Do your tires have a rugger compond tread? Also, I like to ride my bike with the tire pressure set at 70psi., do you have a tire with a comparable rolling resistance? I am also worried about bending or warping my rims during tire installation, is there a way to have tires made on wheels?

Answer:

We have a lot of positive feedback with the Laguna Hybrid tires 700 x 35, please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-83-700-x-35-laguna-hybrid-622.aspx  Our tires can be slippery at first because of a silicone mold release we use. Once that has worn off and the outer surface of the tire breaks in, the tire will grip better. Try the Laguna at the stock psi of 90 if you weigh under 180. Yes the wheel can bend during installation but only if the wheel is old and the spokes haven't been tightened, otherwise wheels don't bend. Hope this helps.

Question: Message: Greetings, A few weeks ago I emailed you looking for a canadian distributor and you got back to me very quickly. A personal touch that is very impressive. Now I have a question regarding which tire is best for my needs. I have a mountain bike with regular tires on it (26 x 2.1) but the problem is that I'm big guy.. Big as in too wide vs. too tall. At the gym I had found I liked cylcing with the exception of the fact that pedaling a bike while facing day-time TV was making me suicidal! Day time TV sucks! Anyway, I live in a temperate area and near a nice long scenic and delightfully flat road that I intend to ride on.. However my weight makes air filled tires (the ones I have go to 60 psi) bulge dangerously and they're always going flat fast. So I'm looking for a airless tire that'll fit my bike and support a 450 lb body for at least 4-6 months. Can you help?

Answer:

Yes we designed a combo for the heavier rider. The Rainier Aqua Glider High Reslient at 120 psi on a Velocity downhill rim called the Psycho
http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-839-velocity-psycho-rim-26.aspx
you can see a picture of the tire at http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-61-26-x-15-rainier-power-glider-559-premium.aspx we just added the combo so we don't have a picture of the rim yet but you can see it at www.velocityusa.com This is exactly what you need. You will have to get the rim laced up to your hubs but this set up is the only system that can take your weight. Please feel free to call me

Question: Message: I think your tires look great, and I know you have tires for scooters, but do you have tires for motorcycles, or are you planning on making them if you do not? I am building a motorcycle and would love to use your tires if you make them for bikes. Thanks!!

Answer:

heat build up will cause urethane to get unstable (soft). This will require that a tire for highway use be corded and belted. Also to make a tire out of urethane that will be as big as a motorycle tire will require a lot of urethane and will make the resultant tire heavier and more expensive. It would just be simpler to foam fill an existing motorcycle tire is a urethane could take the heat. BTW heat build up isn't an issue for bike and wheelchair.

Question: Message: Do you make this tire 36"? June

Answer:

sorry we don't make anything that big. There are some Ordinary and Penny Farthing bikes being made so this type of tire should be available again. I don't know where you can get them but I do know that the old bikes are popular so these bikes have gone back into production as replicas. If this is the idea, then I can get you going in the right direction. If not, then what do you need such a big tire for?

Question: Message: i have some other brand solid rubber tires on my bike. whenever i hit a gutter with any sideways force, they pop off the rim. i don't know what brand they are because the say mfg by _________ (blank) on them. they do say they are 26X2.0 i entered my answers to the quick size method (at end of this msg) and i am leery of getting a 26X2.0 for fear of the tires coming off the rims again. my bicycle is a diamonback islander (79-1909) with rims added by the bicycle store where i bought them. the rims have a label that says "rims by alex 6061-T6 559x20" i will buy whatever y'all suggest and have them put on at another bike shop in order to get the wheels tuned so the spokes don't break easily. thanks and looking forward to commuting by bike again. k answers to quicksize: rims as wide as a quarter. 26 diameter flat not crown Below are your results for the rim dimensions you entered: ISO: 559mm Width: 20mm Depth: 18mm Number of Matches: 8 Tires that will fit: 8 choices...too many for me.....

Answer:

sorry but your rims are too thin for the tire to seat properly. Sounds like you have a Nu-Teck tire. We sell them too. If you want to solve your problem for good take a look at  We can sell a rim and tire that we know for a fact that fits it. You do have to get the rim laced up to your own hub but we don't have a tire to fit your rim at this time.

Question: Message: I would like to buy a pair of tires for my Specialized. I have Alex DM20 rims. I would like Catalina Freestyle HD 20 x 1.75 High Resilient if they will fit. You know I almost would say send me some 20 inch wheels with tires on them if it is going to be a problem.

Answer:

The DM20 is 19.5mm wide so the Catalina HR should fit no problem. We do offer rim/tire combos but the Catalina will fit yours, so that isn't neccessary. We do install tires for people but you shouldn't need to as these will be fairly easy to get on. Let me know if you have other questions.

Question: Message: Hello Airfree, We are looking for a contractor to manufacture tyres for our range of high specification wheelchairs. The size of the tyre is not in your catalogue of sizes, it will need a new production run. The specific size of the tyre cannot be shared at the moment, to protect our design concept, but it is within your existing size range. We would ideally like it to be based on BMX street tyres so it is lightweight, but can be as high psi equivalent as possible (90psi?). The bead will be 1.75” wide. Can you give me a cost for; A set of sample tyres, for our prototype use, 4-8qty. An initial production run, of around 200qty. cost per 1000, if we are successful with orders. We are based in the United Kingdom I look forward to your reply, Best regards Kevin

Answer:

We will be more than happy to help. First you need to make a blank design with out tread so you can test the fit and such. This is fairly cheap but may takes time and resources. For example, we can machine two mold halves and make prototype tires but just the plastic alone for the mold halves costs several hundred dollars. You should be looking at wider rims with lower profile tires. We can help you with the shape of the tire but if you have modeling done then already know that. Finsished tires in quantity will be around 10-20 dollars depending on size and urethane. Getting the prototypes is the hard part and where we can help.

Please send me your NDA and I'll sign it, let me see what we are dealing with and I can better explain what your options are and how to get there.

Question: Message: I have questions about the Mako Performance wheelchair tires. I have had two flat tires in 6 weeks and have been considering flat-free inserts for my wheelchair. Someone recommended Kik Tires as an alternative, because they actually weigh less, and hopefully perform better. Anyway, when I was researchiing Kik Tires, I found this site, and the Mako Perfmance tires appealed to me. My rims are Sunrims SW 6000 (24 inch), and the tires I currently use are Primo 25-540. Will the Mako Performance air free tires fit? Also, the tires I use require 100 psi. Should I order the Makos at 100 psi, or would some other psi rating give me the same ride? Finally, I noticed that they are available in blue, but when I clicked the order button, blue was not an option in the drop-down menu. I believe I would like to order a set in blue, and a tool to put them on. I just need a little assistance. (I am leaving for work in a few minutes, but I would like to make a decision tonight or tomorrow.) Thank you, Nygel

Answer:

We have the Mako in two different widths. Please measure the interior width of the rim by deflating the tire and getting a look at the distance between the hook beads. According to Sun, your rim may be the Single Wide which is 22mm wide on the inside, but it isn't listed as the SW but it is probably the same rim.

I can get you the tires in blue at 100 psi or what ever psi you like. There may be a three week wait to make the custom psi, but it is worth it.

The option to order blue has been fixed, thanks for pointing that out. You will probably need to order the Mako Performace Wide but please double check the rim and call me if I can help.

Question: Message: I would like to replace my pneumatic wheelchair tires with a pair of your Air Free tires. However, I'm not sure of the size. My current tires are 24x1. They are Primo V Track 25 - 540 tires having a maximum inflation pressure of 100psi. The rims are Sunrims DW6000. I'm hoping to find a replacement that has performance and rolling resistance similar to, or better than what I have now. I believe your Mako Performance 24x1 tires would fit, but you would know better than I. Thanks in advance for any information you might be able to provide, Taylor

Answer:

Thank you for your inquiry.

We don't know how wide your rim is and I can't find it in the Sun Catalog. Please measure the width of the rim and let me know because you are the second person today to ask. The Mako Performance is the tire of choice but it comes in two widths because of all the different rims.

Please callme at 386 478-1861 if you need help measuring otherwise just zap me the width of that rim so I can add it to our database. Whether or not our tire will fit, we can still help.

Question: Message: I have a Bike-E NX 2000 with the Sun M14A rear wheel, dimenstions 37-451MM (20 x 1 3/8"). It came with a Primo Comet tire that had the unfortunate charactaristic of loosing traction in wet spots, gravel and leaves. I replaced it with a Maxxis "slick willie", but the PSI of this tire is only 65 lbs, which has caused me to loose at least 2-3 MPH in normal cruising speed. Can you help me out? I am looking for a good high-pressure tire that will also provide me with the traction I need.

Answer:

after having seen the results of testing of over 400 rubber bicycle tires, I am convinced no tire will perform well on wet leaves and loose gravel. The tire you seek does not exist. In order to make tires faster, the tire company must ovalize the contact patch. To do that you have to make the carcass supple. This means protective layers are eliminated because they are stiff. Usually, the thinner the carcass the faster the tire. Typically when you lose speed with a tire, the carcass will be thicker. In your case you went to a thicker tire from the Primo (which is a fairly fast tire) to the Maxxis. However going to a wider tire on the rear will help with stability and staying with lower psi tires will help keep the contact patch oval and large thus giving you better traction. Rolling resistance is not a function of psi as low psi tires can have the same crr (rolling resistance) as high psi tires. If you can find a wider 451 tire and it will fit, that would be the best thing you could do for your bike period. Hope that helped.

Question: Message: Hi Hugh, I have a wirewheel pony cart that I would like to have the airless tires for. What do you need to know to order them? Right now I do know the tire is 24"...and 2.215 (or close to that I'll have to double check before I order. What else to you need? I remember something about a nickel, dime, penny or quarter measurement? Now these tires won't go flat...right???? I'm so sick of flat tires. It's a heavy duty type pony cart not just the typical bike wheel..has a hub where you can put some kind of grease in it if you want. I drive in the woods and many things make the tire go flat...sometimes fix a flat don't work and if you ever try using that stuff while still hitched to the cart....not pretty. Thank you, Linda

Answer:

there are two wheels out there for 24" pony carts. We have a tire to fit each we just have to know which one. Please lay a quarter on the back of the rim, if the rim is around the width of the quarter order this tire http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/c-13-24-inch.aspx  if the rim is substantially wider tan the quarter, then order this tire

These won't go flat and wev'e never had any returned from pony cart owners. If the weight of the pony cart will more than 100lbs per wheel you should get the tires customized to a higher psi of 75 or 80 which will add a few days to the order.

Question: received tires, very happy, perfect for commuting - I'll spread the good news. You should advertise more, this technology is a slam-dunk. Annette

Answer: messageadmin

Question: Message: airtires vs, airless tires in comfort? Convenyional tires have a floating effect over bumps, how's airless comepare?

Answer:

conventional tires have a floating effect---almost true. The contact patch is a little round spot where the tire meet the ground and it shrinks and grows depending on pedaling, weight and such. No two rubber tires really do behave the same way. How well the tire handles the dynamic growth and shrinking of the contact patch will determine watts spent on a ride. Typically wider tires with lower psi will not pop back into shape as quickly and these would be comfort tires. Tires that do pop back into shape real quick would be higher psi tires or have a construction inside the carcass to allow for that. High psi tires are known to shake, rattle and roll the rider. So it isn't fair to compare an airless tire to all rubber tires since they all behave differently. Some have high rolling resistance, some have low, some are high psi and others are not and differences between them is so vast as to invalidate any generalizations. Example: 45psi MTB 26 x 2.0 vs. 120psi Touring 700 x 23c. This is apples to oranges.

To answer your question though, urethanes are used everyday for cushioning. Your sneakers, your car seat etc.... I'd say our tires feel great, but it really depends on what you've been riding before.

Hope that helped.

Hugh

Question: Message: I would like to purchase two tires appropriate for street/commuting/light touring for my Sun EZ-1 Super Cruzer with 16' front and 20' rear wheels standard as purchased. What do you recommend? Are there dealers in my area of Santa Rosa, CA? Thanks for the information. You have a very informative and user-friendly website. Earl

Answer:

Sorry, no dealers near you at this time.

I looked up your bike and it is a 2003 model? If so, we don't have your rim in our database and it is listed as just an aluminum rim, which could be all sorts of things. We have a new feature called the Bicycle Database. Just select your Brand, then Model and then year and it will walk you through the steps you need to determine which tires will fit. We just made it live three nights ago and we don't have any feedback yet. I'd appreciate you taking a look at it and letting me know if it worked for you.

Thanks.

Question: Message: Hello, On 4/25 I ordered a tire for a PTS Pro Turbo 1000 recumbent exercise bike (Invoice # 1124224). The tire received is marked on the side of the tire as a 27 X 11/4 tire but is actually a 26" + tire. I took it to a bike repair shop here and was advised the tire is not the correct size and could not be mounted. Should I mail to you the rim so the tire can me matched? From what I understand the correct size is listed as 27 X 1 1/4, maybe NU-TEK marked the tire wrong (?). Thanks in advance , Gary

Answer:

You were sent the correct tire. It needs to be stretched on to the rim. Airless tires are smaller than the rim because of the stretch. We have sold hundreds of these for your PTS and they work. Your bike shop should pay attention to the numbers on the tire or consult the manufacturer before making you believe you had made a mistake.

Please feel free to call me or have your bike shop call, this tire is easily installed. As a last resort, you can send us your wheel and we will install the tire for you, but you can get it on with tire levers.

Hugh

Question: Message: How much weight can these airless tires hold? I work in shipyard and weigh 340lbs and ride over train tracks will these tires work?

Answer:

only a couple will and you may need to go and get new rims if they don't fit yours. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-61-26-x-15-rainier-power-glider-559-premium.aspx  and http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-64-26-x-19-sierra-unidirectional-559-premium-hd.aspx  both of these would have to be cxustomized to 120 psi and can take a couple of weeks to get but they are the only tires that will be able to take the weight. Our last option is the Rainier / Velocity rim combo. Please see

Question: Message: Hugh: I have a home-made horse-drawn buck board trailer that has bike tires for wheels. The tires were ordered from a whole-sale tool supply company so I don't know the manufacturer. The tire size is 26 in X 2.125. The rim measurements are 1.25 in. wide by 1/2 in. deep. I'm tired of the flat tires I often have and so I'm very interested in your air free tires. I am looking at your Legacy Teton All Terrain HP tire. I tried to use your website information to determine if this tire will fit my rims but I came up inconlusive on this. Can you help? If this tire will not fit, do you have an all terrain tire that will. Thanks, Don

Answer:

Sorry but noting we have will fit as your rim is so wide it will only swallow up any tire we have. I really don't have any suggestion that you can easily employ. You could buy a new wheel that our tire will fit, or you could try another brand of rubber tire or try to find some moped wheels (moped tires are tough). Call me if you like at  so I can better explain the rim and tire combo or going to another rubber tire.

Hugh

Question: Message: How do I leave feedback about these tires. I enjoy riding more than ever because I do'nt have to worry about getting a flat tires anymore.

Thank you for the offer.

Just reply to this and I'll be happy to add whatever you have to say to our "testimonials" page.

Question: Message: i ordered and received one Monaco Performance Touring 700 x 28@115 psi. it says on the web page that The Legacy Monaco Performance Touring tire will replace the following sizes: just about any 587 or 622 (700c) rim with a bead width of between 14-16.5mm. i have a rim that is 15mm wide. on the tire that i just received it states 16-18mm on it. i've tried to put on the rim and it will not snap into the bead. will i have to return this item? i was hoping to be pleased using this product.

Answer:

Have your tried to loop it on it? Just smoosh the tire into the rim as best you can and then take a cable tie and tie it off to the rim. Install the tire all the way around the rim. At that point the tire will decrease in width once stretched and should then fit. Don't worry that you can get the tire seated, just seat it as best you can then stretch the tire on the rim. It should fit and I'll take of the mistake on the website. Let me know how this works.

Question: Message: Hi how are you? I got two questions. 1. do you ship to canada? 2. i got Kona Paddy Wagon with 700x28 tires do you think i could fit your 700 x 35 on my ride? if you are not sure can you send me the installed hight x width i got some room to work with. I like a bigger tire as it protects the rim and gives a better ride. Single speed bikes rock and never getting a flat again, wow that is the bee's knees.

Answer:

Dear Bud,

We ship to Canada all the time. The Laguna tire will be 3 mm thinner and 3 mm lower than air current tire but you shouldn't have to worry that any thing will happen to your rims using the airless tire. Double check though to make sure that our airless tire will be able to fit inside of your rim. You can inspect the rim and determine if it is between 18 and 21 mm wide.  If so then the Laguna will fit just fine.  If it's bigger let me know and we can go to plan B.
thank you very much

Question: Message: If someone were to order 2,000 air free bike tires how much would you come down from your $24 per tire price? Is it harder work to ride a bike with air free tires? Does it require more effort? Do they cause a bike to weight more?

Answer:

yes the price would come down. Whether or not a bike would weigh more depends on what rubber tires weigh. Many rubber tires weigh more than airless tires but it depends. The rolling resistance may or may not be comparable and that relies on the quality of the rubber. Please tell me the parameters of your project and I'll be happy to help.

Question: Message: I ride a Schwinn Sierra 26" for exercise 10 -15 miles per day 8 months of the year street, asphalt and fine crushed stone bike paths. I hate flat tires (I just got one today - I only needed to walk a mile or so home - and this is what prompted me to contact you). I have heard that there is a solid tire that does not have a tube - never goes flat. What do you suggest? Murray

Answer:

I just looked in the database and your rim is listed as "aluminum" which isn't enough for me to say if our tires will fit. If we have a tire to fit, I would recommend the Rainier Aqua Glider HR please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/c-14-26-inch.aspx  but the first thing we need to find out is if any of our tires will fit. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/sizing/FindTires1.asp let me know what it says.

thanks

Question: Message: I have an old bike {maybe 100 years } it is very hard to make out the writing on the frame I beleive it is belguim bike and it has ahessmert inscribed on the frame or it maybe amessmert and brugge written on it can you advice a website to go to to find out more many thanks ron

Answer:

I know that some companies have begun to make replacement parts for the Penny Farthings and Ordinaries. You want to do searches under

"penny farthing"
"ordinary bicycle"

we get asked from time to time about making tires for them and I have talked to people who say that they are making a comeback. I'm sorry but I don't know where to send you, just that what you are looking for exisits, keep trying.

Question: Message: Hello my name is pat and i am trying to get some information on a mountain bike that was givin to me, the model of the bike is a fuji mx260, and i cannot find any info on the web about the bike and i hope you guys can send me some information on the bike because i would like to clean it up and put some new parts on it, so i can use it. thank you for your time and have a great day. thank you.

Answer:

All I could find is that the bike is a 21 speed? It looks like your bike may have been brought into this country by an individual because we have a database of every bike sold in the US since 1993. The MX260 sounds more like a part instead of a model. Normally when searching, you can find something, but in this case nothing. But they make tens of thousands of each model so there should be some trail, but there isn't which means
you either have a very obscure bike (not likely)
the bike was brought in by an individual (they name the same bike differently abroad)
or the bike is so old, that they just quit writing about it before the internet got big (likely)

I'm not sure what parts you need, but any bike shop will be able to get you parts to fit. Hope this helped.

Question: Message: Hi~there~ I wanna know ,how to rent a bike in down town Toronto~

Answer:

I believe there is a yellow bike program in Toronto where you can just 'take a bike' , otherwise we are in Florida and I have don't have a database of Candian bike places yet. Sorry I can't helpmore.

Question: Two bikes involved: Club Fuji (purple); ID plate = SHAKE 6061-T6, TCO, SPORT tire = 700x25C 100psi wheel = Fonde de Jante, VELOX, MAVIC 192 tube = 23 622 rim = 11/16" wide x 1/4" deep & the inside is flat. Fuji Ace (black; ID plate = FUJI ACE, FEATHER, Si35 tire = 700x25C 100psi wheel = 25/28-622 tube = 25-622 (700x250) rim = 13/16" wide x 3/8" deep & the inside is flat. Both bikes have quick release front and back wheels. Both rims may need to be trued. I purchased them used and the have been sitting up for 2+ years. I want to restore them for use in both triathlons and in long distance rides (ie: Bike Ride Accross Georgia which I did on a different heavy mounntain bike last week). In using the charts they both may use ISO 622 diameter tires. Did I understand that for extra safety the tires come in yellow? I really appreciate you help in this matter. Thank you, Bud

Answer:

Dear Bud,

The Daytona will fit the Club Fuji http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-89-700-x-20-daytona-high-performance-622.aspx  and but only our Laguna tire will fit the other but that isn't really the tire you want. It's odd, you have a really wide rim on the Ace and our street/touring tire doesn't fit it, only the Laguna which is more a ride to the store once in a while tire.

There really isn't any need to send your wheels to me as the Daytona is our easiest to install tire. I can work with a bike shop in your area to help you get these tires on and your wheels trued. Please call me at 386 478-1861 and I should be able to help.

Question: Message: Hugh, I just installed my air free tires, and so far I'm thrilled. Did you give me a "120 PSI" set, as you said you would? I can't find documentration of that anywhere, but I think the tires are perfect. They don't even visibly "squash out" with my weight, which I like. I'm supposed to return the installation tool, correct, so I'm not charged for it. Where and how do I return it? Thanks. Installation wasn't that hard. Dave

Answer:

I'm glad you are happy with the tires. Don't worry about sending the tool back and yes, you got the 120psi tires.

Hugh

Question: Message: Do the High Rebound material tires wear longer? I bought some Legacy Teton All Terrain in January 2005 and commute on pavement and the tread is worn down a lot already - kind of squaring off the tire making it handle oddly at times. Should I consider the High Rebound material tires for my next order?

Answer:

yes but you need to make sure the tire will fit. If the Teton fit your rim then it is already pretty close to how wide it needs to be. I recommend the Rainier tire and your rim needs to be 22-26mm wide. If you had to cram the Teton in then the Rainier won't fit but if the Teton slid in, then the Rainier just might fit. How many miles do you figure you've ridden?

Let me know how I can help.
Hugh

Question: Message: I already bought a tire but I can not mount it. It seems like the right tire. The hub is aluminum and it is ONE PIECE not two. The tire you sent me is 12 1/2 by 2 1/4. It looks like the regular tire I dismounted but it seems impossible to mount and your website said it didn't need a tool. It came without any mounting instructions either. How do I mount it?

Answer:

actually the tool is tool large for the tire and thats why you can't use it. Despair not, gently warm the tire in a towel in an oven at 140 degrees for twenty or so minutes. The tire will get softer. Also use a tiny little bit of liquid hand soap around the edge of the rim. Don'tslop it on, just a little. The important thing though is to get the tire warm so it can stretch a little more. Call me if you still have problems.

Question: Message: Greetings. I own an electric recumbent trike (120 lbs). I weigh 180lbs. I am new to the "airless" tire scene, ordered a pair of Greentyres and regreted it. The tire flew off at 15mph... Are your tires more secure on the rim than theirs, because of the added weight it is one of my main concerns. Also, the trike is designed to go about 34mph, I usually travel on the street at an average speed of 20-28mph on 20x1-1/8 tires at 100psi. If I get the Sebrings at 110 psi do you see any potential issues? What speed is max for the tire? What is your return policy just in case they do not work for me? Thanks for your time, Dimitry PS. Yes, the tire from the other company was properly installed according to their instructions, before it flew off at about 14 MPH.

Answer:

sorry we can't recommend our tires for a trike for the very reason you stated. Airless bicycle tires are bicycle tires. Meaning they have been designed to run one in front of another not side by side. The lateral stresses dislodge the tire and yes rubber tires just happen to work but they are not how we would design them on computer today. You need a lower profile tire which is not available at this time. Sorry but you have an application where an airless tire isn't appropriate. We carry the Schwalbe Marathon Plus for people who can't use an airless. Can you tell me about your flats? Maybe I can still help.

Hugh

Question: Message: Could you tell me the weight of the Silva wheelchair tyre And where in Australia can i purchase these or can i buy online?? If so i will be looking to buy at least 6 tyres and would like shipping quote to South Australia. Thank you Steve

Answer:

the Silva weighs around 400 grams. Sorry we don't have any dealers down under yet so we will have to mail order, but before we do that lets make certain the tires will fit and will work for your application. Can you tell me please about how you use your chair, how much you weigh, what tires you presently use and the make and model of your rims (if known) or the interior width and depth of the rim.

Because overseas shipping is expensive our return policy differs from orders stateside so with a little patience we should be able to get you what you need.

Thanks

Hugh

Question: Hugh, Thank you so much for the speedy response. I really appreciate it. I am going to purchase the Daytona TT, which you stated to fit my Xero's. I just have a few more questions before I place my order. What PSI do you recommend for my 247 lb frame (me not the bike, LOL :o)? The max PSI on the last two sets of rubber tires I had was 115. The TT is stock at 120, but would I benefit from a higher PSI; and if so, what might the benefits be? Another question I have is, will I still need rim tape inside the interior of the wheel when installing the Daytona? Thank you again, Johnny

Answer:

I'd get the Daytona at 145 but that is pretty hard. You are on the borderline as making the tires harder only helps to a point. You can try the stock psi and send them back if they don't work and getting custom psi takes another 7 days. How much do you ride at a time? and how fast can you maintain?

Hugh

Question: Message: Hi there . . . I am a disabled Vietnam vet who has been riding scooters for five years now. They get me around when my disabilities make it uncomfortable in standard vehicles. My current scooter is a Zooma, purchased at a Schucks Auto Parts store. The tires are the standard 9x3.50/4, three bolt split rims with a 90 degree valve stem. I fixed a flat today and the thought of getting a flat away from home base is not appealing. Do you have anything that will fit my needs? Thanx, Craig

Answer:

the Onega tire may work for you however it is a very boxy tire so it makes for a better rear tire than front. Otherwise there are plenty of airless tires that size but they are all kind of square and not round like I think they ought to be. Scooters are tough to keep air in because of the small diameter and the heat build up under load. Unfortunately there aren't quality rubber tires for that application made to the standard of say a moped or motorcycle tire. Instead they are all handtruck and landscape tires that just happen to fit the same hub scooters use. In my estimation scooters (the little small ones not the Vespa or similar) should not be considered reliable transportation simply because of the tires. You wouldn't believe how many people call here the day after Christmas.

Question: Message: We're looking for a pair of heavy-duty wheels for our steel tube framed pony cart. The cart currently has a pair of 20" bicycle tires which go flat often. We're looking at a couple of options: One option would be to purchase a pair of heavy-duty tires to fit onto the existing heavy-duty spoked wheels. Another option would be to buy new set of wheels... either 20", 22" or 24". We'd prefer 24". The cart is well worn so we don't want to spend a fortune on new wheels... we can buy a new much nicer cart for under $500. What would you recommend and what would be the cost for a pair of wheels. Please let me know. Thanks, Mike

Answer:

Try Big Daves Vet supply or similar as the 24" steel box wheel isn't too expensive. We don't have any wheels yet but Skyway is another option. The Rocky Mountian Wide tire would be your best bet. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/Bicycle/Legacy/24x20.html otherwise the cheapest way would be to replace the tires you have. And I would suggest the Mohave as it seems to work well on pony carts. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/Bicycle/Legacy/20x20.html get the tires customized if you have more than 200 lbs on the two wheels.

Hope this helped.

Question: Message: I am interested in ordering airless tires for my bike. I have a TREK 4300 2004 and the info states that I would need to purchase rims too as my Matrix 750 rims are not suitable for any of the tires. I ride 60 miles a week and get many flats due to the crap on the road. I ride both road and off road. Please help with any suggestions and whether I need to purchase new rims to have your airless tires too. Thanks, ERIN

Answer:

The Rainier tire is a good commuter tire but probably not for off road. You do have very thin rims so if you need to go airless, get the Velocity Cliffhanger rim and the Raineir tire, please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-110-24-x-20-rocky-mountain-roadster-wide-507.aspx

another option is to stick with rubber tires. What kind of flats are you getting? How much do you weigh, what tires are you using and are you already using things like slime, etc..? Schwalbe makes a pretty tough rubber tire and we sell them. Let me know about the riding habits and I should be able to help.

Hugh

Question: Message: I receantly purchased an 18" BICYCLE for my son. I know 18" is a new size, the problem is finding a tube/tire for it . Any help will be greatly appericated . thank you Bily

Answer:

please check the numbers on the side of the tire, you should find something like this
" 40-355 " or xx-355  with xx being any numbers. If so then I can get two different sizes 18 x 1 1/8 or 18 x 1.50. Take a look at http://www.airfreetires.com/sizing/  these are all the sizes that are on bikes leaving the factory. I can only get two of the size with 18 x 1.5 being the largest. The costs $22.00 each and shipping another $15.00 because the tire comes from Canada and gets shipped twice. Once to us then you. Sorry about that but we don't deal a lot with rubber tires and if you look real hard, you should be able to find it online but if not, I can send you a link to purchase it from us. It is a Schwalbe Marathon which is a good tire. Let me know if this helps.

Hugh

Question: Message: I'm a quadriplegic with a tilting Quickie electric wheelchair. I currently have semi-pneumatic front tires and poly-foam inserts in the rear (driving) tires. They both ride very rough over uneven terrain. Even sidewalk joints are jarring. I have used pneumatic tires in the past and loved the smooth ride. However, I live in a rural area and flats were a constant issue; even with teflon shields and Slime. Can your tires offer me the smoothness of a pneumatic setup? I'm not concerned with performance. I'm more concerned with comfort. Thank you, Sean

Answer:

There is a line of airless tires called Comfort Trac and are rubber tires that have been filled with foam that is said to give a softer ride than the regular foam fill. Now if you have an insert then it will not ride as well as a rubber tire without and semi pneumatic is just another word for hard hollow rubber tire. True you aren't riding on the ideal set up.

A urethane caster will ride better and softer than the semi pneumatic and a foam fill will ride better than a rubber tire with an insert. Please take a look at the numbers on your tires and let me see if they are available in softer materials. I couldn't tell from your description what size tires you have and Quickies have a lot of different sizes. So please take a little time to adequately research your chair and I'm sure I can come up with something.

Hugh

Question: Message: I am trying to see if you have a 650 road bike tire. It fits my Cannondale triathlon road bike. Thanks. Sam

Answer:

Sorry no 650 airless tires yet. The best I can do for you is to offer a Schwalbe Stelvio which is about the only tire I can get in that size and you can get them out of Victoria BC faster than I can. Get a few people together and I'll show some folks how to make an airless tire. We need more manufacturers. Until then....

Sorry I can't help more.

Hugh

Question: Message: I have a Swinn touring bike about =-23 years old invery good shape. When I rode it I got so frustrated with flat tires. Your tires sound like what I want, unfortunately I don' have any specs other than size is 27x1 1/8 there are two sizes listed @ your web sit. Can you tell me which size I need. Riding will be both road and light off road.

Answer:

There are three different sized rims that could be on that bike and we make a tire for each. Please see the quicksize at www.airfreetires.com/quicksize to find out which rim you have. The Savannah Cruiser is a street tire with a generic I block tread pattern which makes it good for just about anything except loose sand and mud. If your weigh over 180 you should consider getting the tires customized to a higher psi. Let me know what the qucksize says or tell me how wide the rim is in relation to the coins in the picture and then I can tell you your options.

Also, sorry no dealers in your area of Ohio yet.

Hugh

Question: Message: Hello Hugh I bought some tires from you earlier this summer for some ice cream carts. at first they pealed off a few times like you worried about. But maybe they just had to seat themselves because they have been good for the past couple of months. So now I am planning on ordering some more. I was just wondering if you had another mounting tool. The cart side tires have an older style BMX tire wit a hub that is about 2.5 inches wide and the standard tool doesnt work very well. We got the tires on, but it would be nice to have the proper tool for the job. THank you James

Answer:

you can drill a hole in the end of the bar that you can slide over the axle. The bar is wide enough to drill a 3/4" hole, otherwise we don't come across this often. Also putting them in the oven will make them soft enough for a few minutes that you can put them on with tire levers, so that is an option. Liquid hand soap will help too. You can call me and I can over all the possibilities there are.

Thanks for thinking of us again.

Hugh

Question: Hello again! And thanks for the swift and comprehensive reply. I checked the rims on my EZ-1 SC with the 'quarter test'; a U.S. quarter is almost precisely the width of my rear rim (20"X 1.75) and on the front rim (16"X 1.75), the quarter overhangs the rim by approximately 1/16" on both sides with the quarter centered. From your email, I understand that a non-HR formula Pocono tire for the front 16-inch rim is available, and that the Catalina HR tire will fit the rear (20") rim properly. If this is correct, please let me know so I can set up the order. I am also considering placing Air Free tires on my Sun EZ-3 USX recumbent trike; that should be simpler because all three rims share apparently identical rim dimensions (20" X 1.75). In any event, I am very excited about outfitting my EZ-1 SC with Air Free tires and I hope to become one of your devoted customers (and disciples!). Many thanks, James

Answer:

The Catalina Standard Foam will fit for sure at any psi. The Catalina HR comes from a different manufacturer and thier tire requires a very deep rim like a Skyway mag wheel.

The Pocono will be a tight fit. I wish I knew the name of the rim for our database because thats odd they would put two different width rims on the bike.

Try the Standard foam Catalina at 110psi and the Pocono on the front at 90 or less if you weigh less than 180lbs, if you weigh more, bump up the psi 20 pounds on both. I think this is the best we are going to be able to do at this time.

How do you ride the trike? Fast, hard, leisure? How many miles at a time and how often? Also check the rim width on the trike as the designation on the rim (20 x 1.75) is a suggestion not a size.

Hugh

Question: Message: I am looking for air free tires for an Ego Electric Scooter made by www.egovehicles.com. The tube is a 20X1.95 on a 48 spoke double-walled rim produced by a company called 'Shining'(?) that I could not find in your rim database. The scooter has a weight of 135pds, and a top speed of 23mph. It comes with Kenda Kikzumbutt high pressure tires (80-100psi). What do you recommend for the street commuting I do? Thanks, Adrian

Answer:

that rim is actually too wide for any of airless tires to fit. Our tire needs to snug itself into the rim and two weeks ago, a customer measured his rim and gave me the dimensions. Please confirm by placing a quarter on the back of the rim, the rim will be much wider, if not let me know. Otherwise the only thing we can help you with is the Schwalbe marathon Plus, not an airless tire but a really tough rubber tire. 20 x 1.75 and can take 400lbs, http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/c-128-tough-rubber-tires.aspx

Question: Message: Hi, I need a quality high mileage tire. I put about 8000 miles on my chair a year, all on city streets and sidewalks. I do not drive through hospital corridors or though houses with tile and carpet floors. I am having a hard time paying for so many of those soft grey tires that are nearly as soft as a pencil eraser and last only a few hundred miles! The dealer I bought my Invacare Arrow from is unsympathetic and I think looking for the quick and easy buck when they want over $100.00 each. I am only 150lbs so it isn't like I'm too heavy for the rubber. I used to be a welder/ machinist, so I can if need be, buy trailer wheels & tires and build hub converters, but I don't want to if I can find tougher tires and better prices. Can you help? Sincerely, Daniel

Answer:

I did some checking,

going to a black tire won't help with tire longevity. The carbon black is used only to color the tire and doesn't add wear properties. There is a landscape tire in that size but it won't last longer because its' made with the same rubber compound as the medical tire. Your usage though may qualify you for wholesale prices. Rubber tires are fairly cheap and foam fills are three times the price. If you can deal with flats, get rubber tires cheap from me, if you gotta go airless, then get foam fills from me cheap. Either way you get cheap tires. Again there aren't really any more durable tires in that size so your only economy will be in the way you purchase.

Rubber tire 14 x 3 (3.00x8)
V-Tread, Duratrap, Power, Duratrap retail for $27 - $30 each plus $10 for inner tube

Foam Fill 14 x 3
four tread patterns, including a "wide" version retail for $67 - $75 but no inner tube

I can't tell you what my prices are but if you under stand basic retail mark up, you'll see that you are in a position to get tires closer to my price than yours. Sounds to me like you'll be needing to buy tires regurlarly so let me know, and I'll be happy to set you up where you can log in, order tires at distributor prices whenever you need them.

Hugh

Question: Message: I'm just browsing at this point, but wondered if your tool would work on my electric bicycle rim. (It is a front rim with an electic hub motor, making the a couple of inches wider than a standard rim. If the tool would not work, are there other homemade solutions that would get the tire on ? Thanks, Mike

Answer:

bicycle tire levers can work. Greentyre sells a spatula like device that they use but our tires are harder to get on. Our tool can be modified to work by drilling a 3/4" hole through one end and then slide it over the axle. If that won't work, then we may have problems. The fact the tool would be at angle probably wouldn't matter, its' just getting it to fit the axle somehow.

Hugh

Question: Message: My bike is not listed and I clicked on your link to inform you about it. The model is Jeep Cherokee Sport Ltd (man) 2005. Being here I would like to ask if it is possible to have the booklet that comes with the bike in English as the one I have is in French. This booklet has details about servicing and maintaining the bike. Thanks and great info on your site.

Answer:

sorry, we only have the data from Bikealog which sometimes will contain an ommission. I'll point that out to them. Also we don't handle anything like you described as the database we have, we just show because we purchased it for something else. Of course I'd love to turn it into a money making machine, but haven't figured out how yet.

All technical manuals are available from the manufacturer. It takes persistence to get these things but it can be done. Every company has a copy of every manual they ever produced so therefore your instructions are available, just not always easy to get. Hope that helps.

Question: Message: Hi, I am looking for solid tires for floor scrubber Machine is 1200 lbs /550 kg heavy, most of the weight is supported by 2 tires size 4.1/3.5x4

Answer:

most airless tires that size are rated at 300lbs per tire. Obviously you are using rubber tires now?
You have four options:
1. airless tires you fit on your hub
2. foam fill airless tires you fit on hub
3. you send us wheels and new tires and we foam fill your rubber tires on the hub
4. rubber tires
-------
1. may not take weight- but am waiting to hear from manufacturers
2. may work
3. may work better
4. will work but goes flat

In any case we should able to help but your application is on the extreme side of the performance curve of the airless tire in that size. With that much weight the airless tire may not roll as easily as a rubber tire. How soft does the tire need to be? Also describe the nature of your flats and how your machine rolls, distance, etc...

As a last resort, we can offer rubber tires at darn near cost.

Hugh

Question: Message: I'm racing a new type of extreeme gravity race. It is called Inlineboarding or Dirtsurfer. I'm looking at your website and see that the air free tires have a PSI rating. I'm slightly confused about that. I would like to know if there is a racing tire producde by your company that will fit a 20" Jalco rim? We have been using Primo tires and Maxxis all high PSI 110 and over. With the high pressure we have alot of tire skip in the corners. Do your tires react the same way? Of course the HR tires look intrigueing except they are for larger rims. I looked at the Daytona high performance and thought that would be the one . Only if you made something comparible to this in a smaller rim size.

Answer:

Sorry, nothing we have will suit your needs at this time. Maybe at some point in the future our designs may encompass your sport.

If you aren't trying to win any races, try using a No Mor Flats airless inner tube. Its' a little secret, once the tire and tube are on, it isn't ever coming off and the soft mushy ride that it gives is terrible for the street but will give you added handling in loose material. The key is to match your tire size to the tube, see www.normorflats.com  We are going to sell them in the future. Give them a try and tell me what you think when you can.

Question: Message: My name's Eric and I have a '98 P-40 Warhawk, but the grooves in the handlebars are stripped. I was wondering if you had any gyros and handlebars that I could get for it b/c I'm wanting to use it for freestyle bmx. If you don't have any, maybe you could give me a website that I could get some from? thanks. eric

Answer:

I'm sorry, we only sell airless tires for bikes, wheelchairs and we don't deal with the parts like you want. Our database attracts a lot of people and emails like yours make me want to start selling bike parts but for now I can't really help you. Keep trying with other websites and call a bike shop and ask if they use the Bike A Log database, that way they can find your part.

Question: Message: I have an old Schwinn Letour model ventage maybe 20 years old tire size 27x1-1/4 square slot rim inside 1/2" wide X 1/4" deep. I'm looking for some airless (2) tires that fit.. NU-Teck have sent me tires that took a month to get, (sent to the wrong place) and turned to be 7/8" wide to fit into a 1/2" slot. Do you have something that I can use/buy after I get my money back from NU-Teck? Mike

Answer:

Yes, two tires.
One we used to sell called the LeMans Time Trial, 27 x 1, fits a 12mm wide rim, we sold a few of them in the High Rebound material and customers said they were the fastest tires they ever rode. Problem was they didn't like to stay on the rims, so we discontinued it.

The other tire that ill fit is the Daytona HP or TT. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-89-700-x-20-daytona-high-performance-622.aspx  It can stretch to fit and will squeeze into the rim. Your rim is a little narrow for the tire but I have installed on it on rims as thin as yours, just takes a couple of minutes longer and it isn't any problem to stretch the tire the extra 8mm diameter. If you don't weigh over 180lbs. then get the Daytona HP. Call Mr. Nu-Teck and tell them to swap tires.

Hugh

Question: Message: Does the rim have to already have an air valve on it for the tubeless tires for the 4 inch rims, it would be for my scooter and it does not have a vbalve for air. I have always used tires and tubes. But don't want to have to order a new rim. Thanks

Answer:

no your hub doesn't need a valve but it needs to be a 'split' hub which means there are two hub halves which are bolted together. Our tires are sandwiched between the hub halves and cant be stretched on. Can you see all the numbers on your current tires? And are there four bolts going through the hub? Let me know and I should be able to help.

Question: Message: comment I just bought my scooter , when I got it it no tier on it .I'm tring to figuar out what & how ton put the right tiers on it . I also would like to find out how to get a owners manul for it?

Answer:

sorry, we sell airless tires for wheelchair, bicycle and such. Typically we don't deal with scooter, only  a few tires that may fit.  Find all the numbers on the tire and email them to me and I should be able to point you in the right direction.

Question: Message: I'm ready to buy my second set of air free tires. Is the Leguna Hybrid or any other 700x35 tire available in the high resilient elastomer option? I might be able to use a slightly different width but it would have to fit the same rim size as the Leguna fits. I've been happy with my tires (no more flats) and have sent customers your way. Looking forward to hearing from you, George

Answer:

sorry, no HR material yet for the Laguna tires. Try the Monaco as it is a good tire. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-86-700-x-28-monaco-performance-touring-622.aspx  and get it customized to a higher psi. If the laguna fir then the Monaco will. give it a try, its' faster. We appreciate your comments and your efforts. Use this code when ordering in the future  without the quotes so you can get a discount. Thanks again

Question: Message: I wonder about the longevity and cost ratio of your airless tires. I ride my bike almost every day to work and have to replace a normal torn-resistant tire about once a year, costing me around $8.00. To purchase your tires now would cost around $70.00. Are your tires really likely to last longer than 9 years-- the cost it would be over time to compensate for the inital price? I also have heard that airless tires can ruin bike rims. Can my bike rim withstand nine years with a airless tire on it if ridden on every day?

Answer:

you might want an airless tire because it won't go flat. A rubber tire is cheaper, true but it goes flat, so you are basically paying for a premium. Airless tires don't ruin rims. Most rims break today with rubber tires. Ask any bike shop and they will tell you that people bring in broken wheels all the time with rubber tires on them. Airless tires unfortunately have been the subject of misinformed people. If they broke wheels, then people in wheelchairs who live in them 18 hours a day every day of the year would be breaking wheels and they dont. Moral of the story is that flimsy wheels break but strong ones dont regardless of tire being used. Urethanes are used to ABSORB shock like your seat post bushing or seat cushion. How are my squishy urethane tires going to ruin anything?

Question: Message: We have a S&D 2wheelchair. The wheel outside diameter is 22" and 1" WIDE. THE TIRE THAT IS ON The wheel READS "CAPTIVE AIR". One of the tires is failing and needs to be replaced. Do you have anything to 0offer? Thanks John

Answer:

sure, the Sherwood and others should fit. You have a 24 x 1 3/8" tire but you can use other 24" tires as well. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/c-2-wheelchair.aspx

Question: Message: DO YOU HAVE BIKE TIRES THAT WILL HOLD A 450LB PERSON? FOR A TRICYCLE OR ANY OTHER KINDS OF BIKES. THANK YOU, CHRISSY

Answer:

yes, you can get the Rocky Mountain Roadster at 100psi for each tire and it can take the weight on a tricycle. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-107-24-x-175-rocky-mountain-roadster-507.aspx  the other option is to get the Rainier High Rebound tire with a matching rim like whats pictured here but you'll have to find a bike and put the wheels on it,

Question: Message: Hi Folks, I bought a pair of 700C sized Lagunas from you a while back and am just now getting ready to build some wheels for 'em. Can you recommend a 20mm wide by 10mm deep rim (per your site's recommendations). A specific make an mdl # would be most helpful. I will use the bike as a daily driver and for touring. PS: 36 hole too...to match the shimano hubs I already have. Thanks tons for your counsel, Larry Swanson

Answer:

the Dyad rim from Velocity willfit, please see http://velocityusa.com/rims/road-rims.php
I can also get you a good wheel fairly inexpensively at about $300 a pair delivered with the sealed cartridge, black spokes and all,  its the same wheel basically only it comes with the 700c Dyad rim. If you want either I can send you link where you can purchase from our site. If you need a less expensive rim, there are some Alex rims that fit our tires and most single wall 700c rims fit the Laguna as well. Hope this helps.

Question: Message: I have a Super Mag Hauler deer carrier from Cabelas. The new models come with solid tires so they will not puncture when carrying game out of the field. Unfortunately, I have an older model that has inflatable 20 inch tires. Can your tires fit on these type carriers?

Answer:

possibly. The best thing to do is to use the quicksize at www.airfreetires.com/quicksize to see if we are in the ballpark with your rims. Let me know what it says because we have other options too.

Question: Message: I am looking for an air free tire to replace a 13 x 5.00 - 6 tire on a hay tedder. I would like to use the current bolt together rim and hub. Do you have anything like that? Thank you.

Answer:

yes, we have complete flat free assemblies

13 x 650 - 6 Semi Pneumatic
5/8" ball bearing, 3.75" hub length or 5" hub lengths
------
13 x 5.00 - 6 semi -pneumatic
3 3/4" centered hub, 5/8" bearing
--------
13 x 6.50 -6 Solid Foam Flat Free
3.75" hub length, 5/8" bearing
----
there are few others that are different widths, some are semi pneumatic (hard rubber) and others are solid airless and others are rubber tires that have been foam filled. All come with thier own hubs because these tires are popped on the hub by a press. Call me  and I'll be happy to go over your options.

Question: Message: I have experinced the sad downfall of traditional tubeless tyres in the shock usually absorbed by the air-pocket in the tube being transferred trough to the frame ending in frame failure ["cracking"]. BeforeI purchase your tyres, can you please explain how you have overcome this? Yours sincerely , THORIN  -technical coordinator- Brunswick Bicycle Users Group Bicycle Recycle Shed. ------------------ The Bicycle Recycle shed is located at . Its purpose is to facilitate cycling through the sale of affordable second hand bikes, and by teaching basic maintenance. The shed is run by volunteers.

Answer:

urethanes typically absorbs shock (car seat, vibration dampners, etc...). Wheel failure and fatigue is quite common with rubber tires and wheels and frames break all the time with rubber tires, so what are you talking about??? Every one thinks that an airless tire is hard and will break bicycles which basically runs counter to the premise that urethanes are everywhere including your sneakers and urethanes reduce the vibration cycle. Also 140 psi rubber tires are NOT soft and many people describe a bone harring ride when using rubber tires inflated so high. So we haven't overcome anything because there was nothing to overcome. I'm not sure what brand of tubeless you used, but airless tires don't break anything because in the 30 years that they have been sold, we would have found out by now. Also urethane tires are used on wheelbarrows, hand trucks, wheelchairs, mobility devices and others. All have a soft cushy ride. Hope this helps.

Hugh

Question: Message: What weight differences are there between your tires and a similar-purpose inflatable tire?

Answer:

rubber tires weigh 300 - 600 grams for high pressure street tires (700 x 20), depending on construction, tube, and other technolgies embedded with in. The Airless tire comes in around 450 grams. Off road rubber tires (26 x 2.0) can weigh from 500 grams to 1200 grams, ours start at 900 grams. Other tires have similar ranges from 'light' to 'heavy' depending on which subjective evaluative methods are chosen and the airless tire similar to use and size will nestle somewhere between the highs and the lows. Hope this helped.

Question: Message: I am trying to track down an airfree tire for use on electric scooters for the handicapped. Frankly, I don't understand why these aren't standard on these vehicles. Who is less capable of dealing with a flat tire than a handicapped person that relies upon this vehicle for transportation? I have a sister-in-law that needs to use a 4 wheel electric scooter to get around due to injuries suffered in a serious car accident 6 years ago. The cart has allowed her to live a reasonably normal life but the fear of discovering a flat tire on her scooter upon waking in a hotel room while traveling (or even at home) is a real problem. Nor is she able to easily check and correct the inflation of her scooter's tires on a regular basis at a gas station due to the standard of wide spread "self-service" stations. Can you tell me if you deal in anything like this item, or can you tell me where I might find something like this for her? Thanking you in advance for your assistance, Steve Johnson

Answer:

sure, write down all the numbers you see on the tires. Then measure the diameter of the hub. Measure the diameter of the tire, measure the width of the tire. Also check to see if it is a split hub (where the two hub halves are bolted together) or a single piece hub. Note the tread pattern and furnish the make and model of the chair. Given that information, I'm certain we can come up with an airless tire or foam fill that will fit or at the least get you pointed in the right direction.

Question: Message: I have a Carrera Fury mountain bike with 54-559 (26 x 2.1) tyres fitted to Ritchey 'Disc CR' rims. Can you tell me if you have an offroad tire that will fit these rims. I have tried to measure them as per your instructions and if I'm doing it correctly I seem to get: Width - 18mm Depth - 9/ 10mm Many Thanks, Dave Stenton

Answer:

yes, you did it right. Your rims are too thin for any of our airless tires to fit, sorry about that. Your options are: Greentyre has a tire to fit, urethane insert, tough rubber tires, airless tire and rim combinations. Depending on your needs any of these may work for you. Please tell me your weight, distance traveled, frequency and so on and I should be able to help.

Question: Message: I have a couple questions about your Mako Performance tires for wheelchairs. Are these the same as the KIK Mako Tires I recently purchased elsewhere? I purchased the KIK Mako Tires to replace the pneumatic Primo V-Trak tires I have been using for years. I've been disappointed with the KIK Mako Tires as they are more difficult to push than the Primos. I noticed your Mako Performance tires are available in a 175 psi version, so would they be similar to pushing the Primo V-Traks which I inflated to about 100 psi?

Answer:

the Mako tire with the HR material is one of the best airless tires there are period. But how much do you weigh? Getting the Mako tires customized isn't easy any more as the manufacturer doesn't offer that right now so they come in the standard psi. The Silva or Sherwood http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/c-2-wheelchair.aspx?pagenum=1  are a high performance version of a tire that comes from Alshin. One of our suppliers says the tire is better than the Mako but we have no evidence of that yet. If you'd like to make a comparison we then we can offer a discount on the tires. If you decide to try a pair, please use this code " HughDis30 " with out the quotes where the shopping cart asks for it or call me. I'd like to know myself from some one who has already used the Mako tires. Just write a little about your experience with both tires. If they don't work out then we can get you good rubber tires cheap.

Question: Message: I am athe vice president of an asbestos removal and demolition company and we are looking at purchasing wheelbarrow tires that not get flat even if we run over nails. Do you have this type of tire and is it soft enough to move freely over hard object? ( I do not want a hard solid rubber tire)

Answer:

yes, we have several to choose from which will work well for you. If you have the normal one wheel type wheelbarrow then get a tire that is rounded. If you have the two wheel wheelbarrow then get tires with a more flattened profile. Either way, the tire is firm enough to take 500 lbs yet springy enough to bounce over curbs. Please
tire # 00001, 00030, 00047 can be ordered here (or call me) the other tires are basically smaller or take less weight. Please let me know if there is something else I can do for you.

Question: Message: Hello, We are a bike dealer in Reykjavik, Iceland, and we are looking for flat free tires for few of our customers. What we need is 50 tires in the size 26x1.9, preferably black. Please contact me with prices and availability. Best regards, Rúnar

Answer:

Greetings,

We sell to City Bike in Reykjavik and they are familiar with our product. The first thing is to see if our tire will fit your customers rims. Please see http://www.airfreetires.com/sizing/FindTires1.asp

We can sell tires in quantity for for around $25.00 each, but the shipping could be around $250 for the 50 tires. Please let me know how I can help.

Question: Message: I am looking at an Easy-Go golf cart for my yard which includes a lot of woods. Could you please give me a rough estimate for 4 tires, regular golf cart size. I do not have the cart at this time and may not even get one but I need to know any additional cost before I purchase. Thank you Rad

Answer:

rubber tires aren't expensive, $20 - 60 a tire typically with the more expensive ones being the lower profile. If you want an airless golf cart tire, they go for $129.00 each shipped with a small price break for 4. The increase is due to the urethane costs of filling up the tire and the labor. We can handle all your rubber and airless tire needs should you decide to get a golf cart. Hope this helps.

Question: Message: I bought tires from you almost 5 years ago and I have been very happy with them. The only difficulty at the time was finding a bicycle with rims that fit. Now my old bicycle is falling apart and I want to buy a new commuting bicycle with new air-free tires. It looks like you still do not sell bicycles -- only the tires; do you have a list of bicycles that fit your tires? I don't want to buy a bicycle only to have difficulty again getting tires that fit. Thanks, Chad

Answer:

it depends on the tire, if you want the Rainier Aqua Glider then the list is smaller than say others.

Question: Message: I purchased a perdicab from e-bay, a three wheeled unit, made in china, and have been plagued with flat tires much too frequently, and want to change to a air free tire. the tires are 26 x 1 3/4 9that twenty six by one and three quarters) H-103. They are a little strange in that the tire wraps all the way around the tube, but the tire still has a bead that locks into the rim. the rims are very heavy duty, kind of like a light motorcylce tire, with heavier than normal looking rim and spokes. should I g ahead and order the Air Free tires that would fit the 26 x 1 3/4 H-103 or measure the rim, and send you that info? Thanks for your help. the web site URL for this pedicab is: http://cgi.ebay.com/LUXURY-PEDICAB-TRICYCLE-TRIKE-BIKE-TAXI-RICKSHAW_W0QQitemZ7228554384QQcategoryZ2904QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Answer:

those rims don't look deep enough to seat an airless tire. You'll either have to change the rims or go to another rubber tire like the Schwalbe Marathon Plus, please see http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/c-128-tough-rubber-tires.aspx  , I can get that same tire in a 5/8 which is what you need. If you order, just mention you need the bigger one in the order comments, or please feel free to call me and I can tell you how the Schwalbe tire takes 400lbs and is the toughest tire on the market right now.

Question: Message: I bought a few sets of your tires and have been happy with them on the family's bikes for a few years now. However, I now wish to get my aging butt into the seat of a recumbent trike like a Catrike or similar. Are any of your customers happily doing that already? I understand that upright trikes might not be suitable for your tires because they don't lay over into turns, so the forces are exerted much more laterally than on a regular bike, risking ... um... de-installation at speed, but some recumbent trikes have steering wheels that do tilt into turns, and I'm hopeful... What's the current scoop on this topic? Any good news for me? Thanks.

Answer:

if you got some rims that will fit the Catalina 24-27mm wide at the bead, then I'd say lets give it a go. I have customers who have bought these tires for trikes but I've never heard back from any of them. Not sure what to say except you can always send them back if they don't work for you.

Question: Message: I recently received my Monaco Performance 28 tires and like the look of them but am having serious problems with the installation. I have a Bianchi Axis 2005, with Alex A-series 320 wheelsets. I read all the installation instructions including warming the tire in hot water first, using tie downs to secure it into position, using liquid soap to aid installation, and using the install tool correctly, but despite two guys working on it, can't seem to get it anywhere near fitting. Specifically it seems virtually impossible to get the tire to sit in the rim, even when it's around two-thirds of the way on (I don't think we ever got it further than that). So ... does it fit? The tire sizing guide lead me to believe 320's would fit (though only listed 310 & 220). The rim-to-rim size is a penny. But my measurement of the internal rim-to-tim is 14mm. Thoughts? Know anything specific about this rim? Am I not trying hard enough? I tried a buddies Daytona 700x20 and they went on pretty easily. Thanks Malcolm

Answer:

the Monaco is a smaller diameter tire and is harder to put on. Tie the tire in only one place. Don't worry too much if the tire won't squeeze into the rim until after you have looped it on. Make sure as you stretch that the tires' stretchyness keeps up with and doesn't get caught in the rim and isn't able to stretch fully. Tighten all the spokes as the wheel will bend a little. Keep pushing the tool away from you but towards the wheel so you don't break the lip of the tool. Heat the tire in the oven in a towel at 150 degrees for twenty minutes. But the Monaco may technically be too big for the rim, if so then we can send out some Daytonas. That should do it. Hope this helped.

Question: OK - now I,m really confused. I received the tires, have installed them and they tested out fine. The package came from Nu-Teck out of Colorado ! So you purchased them from Nu-Teck and then sold them to me ????? I thought Nu-Teck was one of your competitors ???? I checked out the Nu-Teck site a low and behold the tires are less expensive. I'm ready to order more tires for my other bikes, but why should I purchase them from you ??? Please reply, Gil

Answer:

Seven years ago, we went into business to sell airless tires. We had internet exclusive distribution rights for the Nu-Teck line of tires. Somewhere along the way, Nu-Teck decided to set up thier own website. We sell products from 11 different manufacturers. All of our suppliers drop ship and all of our suppliers have thier own distribution channels, some of which cross over ours. Do the math, if Nu-Teck would charge you less for the same order, then we will refund the difference. Glad you like the tires. Thanks

Question: Message: Good Morning, Hugh. I bought a cheap bike and cannot keep air in my tires. I am a rather large woman who loves to ride bikes but my back tire goes flat before I can get out of the driveway. I have had the checked out by a bike shop twice. They say that there is nothing wrong with the tire. I suspect that my grandson ran into a curb or went off a curb and bent the rim???? And that I am too big for my bike tire? Two-edged sword, I want to ride to lose weight but can't because the tire goes flat right away. What do you suggest???? Thanks for your time.

Answer:

you will need to get new wheels. Keep the cheap bike, just get strong wheels and get Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires. Most rubber tires and bicycle wheels aren't really built to take more than 180lbs, but a good solid double wall rim and thicker spokes can easily support 600 lbs. The Schwalbe marathon Plus tires are rated at 450lbs, so getting this done shouldn't be a problem. You will always need to air up your tires as weight is one of the greatest factors affecting a tire and its' performance. I deal with larger riders all the time. Keep your grandson off your bike and get him another one:-)

Ask a bike a shope to make you a wheel using a rim like the Velocity Cliffhanger only cheaper, ask to use the thickest gauge spokes and ask to get an inexpensive hub. Tell them you want the Schwalbe Marathon Plus 26 x 2.0 ATB with Schwalbe tubes. Don't let them talk you into a more expensive hub. You need the cheapest strongest wheel a bike shop can make. This will take a week or more for them to put this all together and the wheels could cost $100 or more plus the tires. This really is your best option and though the chance of a flat is still possible, your equipment will be better matched to your needs. Hope this helps.
Hugh

Question: Message: My research suggests that airless tires do not have the shock absorbing capacity of regular air tires. This results in passing shock on to bicycle rims and damaging the bicycle wheel rim. Has any manufacturer addressed this with design and fabrication of bicyle rims built especially for airless tires?

Answer:

airless tires don't damage wheels. There are millions of instances where rims have failed with rubber tires on them. This means that wheels break every day for a variety of reasons, usually with being flimsy and weak being the best. Wheels are inherently strong and this is why we continue to use them. Rubber tires at 140psi don't have a lot of shock absorption either. However, elastomers used today could do a better job of handling shock but wheels don't break with airless tires on them because if they did, I'd hear about it, so its' really a non issue.

We could use a rim and tire combo any way and thats because hub motors will become more prevalent so the airless wheel/tire system needs a make over in any case. A rim/tire system would be good for a variety of uses. Hope this helps and thanks.

Question: Message: I am designing a solar device that needs a simple aluminum (if possible) rim without the holes (if possible). It needs to be between 20 and 22" in diameter and at least 3/4" wide to hold a flat belt. I could use about 2000 next year. Do you know how I can contact a manufacturer or seller?

Answer:

you can use a standard iso 507 or 559 rim. Both are common and both are cheap. You can get rims with out holes. How strong does it need to be? Double wall or single wall? What about the inside of the rim? Does a regular rim work for your prototype now? I can put you in touch or take care of it for you. You can get your own extrusion usually for under $4,000 and 2,000 tires would easily take care of any minimums. What you want could be extraordinarily cheap or moderately priced. Tell me more and I should be able to help. Thanks
Hugh

Question: Message: Dear Sir, The Pinehurst Trike Company is developing a new Trike with patented load spreading wheel technology and we would like to include airless tires. Our design calls for a 4-inch rim of polycarbonate or carbon fiber and a low profile tire with a high contact area. The tread design could be the same or similar to your Mohave pattern. We wish to spread the load over a large area to reduce surface impact and potential damage. Production volume is expected to reach 10K units per year within 5 years. Is your company interested in supplying such a tire?

Answer:

sure, send me your CAD files and I'll look them over. Mold costs are higher than what we would like them to be, but you'll need to look at investing $30 - 100K for your tires. We can help, in fact, talk to me before you talk to any body else. All airless tire manufacturers have thier weaknesses, we are the only independant sellers, plus we know how to manufacture and we are the only ones pushing for more robust suites of urethanes to choose from. All manufacturers would have you believe that thier urethane is the 'wonder blend' and that it is a road tire, off road tire, aircraft tire, what ever you want it to be, one urethane does it all. Of course it takes five different urethanes to make a simple pair of sneakers and that industry is where our new elastomers will come from. Beware when approaching other companies. I'd rather show you how to make the tires in your shop and buy them from you for us to sell (we need more designs) than let you deal with the others. Let me show you how to make a better tire for less. Call me at 386 478-1861 if I can help. Thanks
Hugh

Question: Message: I am a serious off roader. I need the extra suspension I get from air filled tires. Will your tires be just as springy and absorb hard drops like my current tires? I also have a custom bike with extra large custom made wheels. What would it take to have your tires made fro my wheels. I can almost guarantee no one else has my wheel size. Thanks, Whitney

Answer:

airless tires better imitate street tires at this time. If you need big springy tires, then large volume tires like the ones you describe should work. If you want to see a product that worked but its' hard to get, see

nobody is doing what you need at this time so there aren't very many options. Please send a picture of your rim or wheel so I can see it out of curiosity. Thanks

Question: Message: Hi, I've got a folding tricycle (Di Biasi) that eats tires. The size tire is 37-406 20x1.35. I understand you do not have any tires that size and I was wondering how much trouble it would be to switch out the tires and rims with one of your 20x1.75 combinations. Any feedback would be appreciated...Thanks Roy

Answer:

finding rims or wheels that fit our tires isn't a problem. We did this last month for a customer who had a folding bicycle  and we put a set of Catalina 20 x 1.75 tires at 120psi on them and he is happy but that is pretty pricey. Have you measured your rims and determined that our Catalina does not fit it? What tires do you use now? Your weight, distances, frequency etc... You can get your own rim and lace it up or buy wheels but before you do that, answer a few questions and lets' see what the options are. Thanks

Question: Message: I need to replace my tires on my scooter. I need 4 and the numbers on the tire say 260 X 8.5 and 3.00 -4 Do you have anything that will fit it and how much are they. I am looking for a tire that will never go flat. I have a Shoprider Deluxe, four wheel.

Answer:

yes we have those tires, they are foam filled ruber tires and we have them in a ribbed tread pattern which is like what came with the scooter and we have a knobby tread as well. The tires sell for $47.25 each and ship the same or next day. These foam filled tires will look exactly like the ones you have now except they weigh more and will never go flat. If you are interested, I'll be happy to work up a quote and send a link to purchase or I can call, Thanks

Question: Message: I have a 2006 Trek 7.2 FX hybrid bicycle with 700c rims. The stock Bontrager tires were 700x35c sized. Next to the tire size is the number (37-622) on the sidewall of the tires. Your Laguna Hybrid tires are 700x35c, and there are other recommendations when I search for tires including a 700x28 tire. I notice the numbers on the Laguna are 35-622, so I assume they're a bit smaller than stock. Will they fit the stock Trek rims anyway? Thanks, Lyndon ===========

Answer:

I show that your rims are the Matrix 750, this means they are probably too thin for the Laguna to fit properly. The Monaco will fit  http://www.airfreetires.com/shopping/p-86-700-x-28-monaco-performance-touring-622.aspx   if you want to use a thinner tire. The matrix 750 is only 15mm wide on the inside which makes a very thin rim and more like a road race rim than the hybrid bike that it is. If a thinner tire is out of the question, then we offer the Schwalbe Marathon Plus which is a rubber but it is a darn tough one and we sell them only to people who have rims our tires don't fit. Please let me know your thoughts and I'll be happy to go over all of your options. Thanks
Hugh

Question: Message: Kids tricycle tire that needs replacement... Measurements are not exact, but also there is one other set of measurement for the rear tires 203X38X25 thanks...

Answer:

our tires are meant to fit box type rims. Please check to see if your rims are rounded or box like. If box like we can fit the front but not the rear. These really aren't the tires for that as I think the tricycle mainly use a hard rubber tire that is hollow on the inside. Please confirm. If that is the case, then lawn mower shops sometimes have them or can get them. Thanks

Question: Message: I am looking for an option for my polaris ATV Cart that is used at speeds below 10 MPH. I am willing to purchase new or have my current tires filled. The specs I have are as follows: Polaris Model # : 45-02172 - 046 Tire Duro G-333 Turf 20 * 10 - 8 HF - 224 - 7 Rim Hub is 4.5 inches offset in by 2.5 to 3 inches

Answer:

I'm getting an exact foam filling quote for you. We require new tires because the urethane puts out gas when the tires are filled and it stresses them so old tires can fail. New ones don't. If you can get tires locally you have sent along otherwise we provide the tires at a competitive price. Should I work up a quote for everything?
Thanks

Question: Message: Hi Hugh Just wanted to let you know that I got the front tire mounted (I'll wait until I get a flat to mount the back one). I followed the web site advice about using dishwashing liquid on the rim, warming up the tire in a hot bath, and moving the tire in small increments. Please put your website advice on the handout with the tires you ship! It might save some folks some trouble. The bike feels good. There seems to be a bit less rolling resistance, and that's great for a casual rider. I'll wait and see how the tire wears and performs in different conditions. For right now, I'm just extremely happy to be able to ride my bike. Just a thought: If I end up being pleased with the tires over the long haul, I'd be interested in representing your product out here. There ought to be someone local who could sell them and help people mount them. Thanks for your help. Ken

Answer:

many thanks and we heed the words of our customers so changes will be coming. If you are interested in selling Air Free tires, please give me a call sometime and I'll be happy to set yuo up. Thanks

Question: Message: Hello Hugh I am in the process of building an 4-wheel electric vehicle, which I hope will be super efficient. I could use some advice on tires. I need 16 inch tires on the front and 24 inch on the rear and they must be airless. I hope to attain speeds of as high as 50 mph. The gross weight of the vehicle including driver should not exceed 500 pounds, so I figure I need as wide a tire as possible to provide proper ground contact for traction and braking. Of course the rolling resistance should be at a minimum to maximize efficiency. I appreciate any advice you can give me inasfar wheels and tires are concerned. Since the funding of this project comes out of my own pocket, prices are a consideration. Thanks for your help Kurt

Answer: Dear Kurt,
thank you for your inquiry.

And easy way to find out what tires you need is to take a look at the low profile car and truck tire. Simply scale down the tire and size your application and it will be anatomically correct. A lot of computer modeling has gone into car and truck tire manufacture so it is safe to assume if you create a scale model of any modern low profile car or truck tire, you will have an intelligent wheel system. Wider tires are better, low profile tires handle better, wider tires lower rolling resistance. We could design and make such wheel if we knew more about your project. Please feel free to forward any images or drawings that you would like us to take a look at.
Thank you very much
Hugh

Question: Message: I've had 8 flat this year and aminterested in your tires. I'm looking at the Hybrid 700X38. I use specialized armidillo infinity tires now, at 90 psi. WIll your tires give similar performnce? (Cornering and traction). Also, How do you get these tires off when the need arises? (I ride in winter and put studded tires on for that season) I haven't found any info on that yet. Thanks - DP

Answer: Dear Dave,
the Laguna hybrid will give you good performance on the street and on hard packed trails.  We recommend that if you've been using tires and 90 now then you should get them customized a little higher to something like 110 or 120 psi.  You can remove the tire by rolling it off the rim but we recommend you only do that once or twice.  I think if you have been using the Armadillo tire, ours will certainly give the same if not better performance.  Please double check to make sure our tires can fit by going to www.airfreetires.com/quicksize and let me know what that says.  A double check the results and give you all your options.  Thank you very much
Hugh

Question: Message: I am 6'-3" tall and weigh 230 pounds. I ride a road bike (2005 Trek 1200) with Alex AT450 wheels. I am currently running 700x25c Bontrager road tires at 110 psi. I ride on a lot of paved roads with small debris (glass, stickers, etc.) on the shoulders and have had a number of flats lately. I tend to ride about 20mph average on rides of 40 - 100 miles. I will periodically do sprints up to 40mph or better on downhill slopes. I periodically ride in organized rides and want to be able to ride competitively. I ran through your rim selector and discovered the Daytona Time Trial (700x20) tire for which your current price is 2 for $50. I understand the simulated pressure for this tire is 120psi. First, is this tire a good fit for the wheels I have and the style of riding I do? Second, should I have the tires customized for a different simulated psi due to my weight?

Answer:

the Daytona is a commuter tire and not a competitive racing tire. Your usage suggests you need a racing tire so to keep things in perspective, only racing tires are as good as racing and all other tires are not. Ours is not a racing tire and you have been using racing tires. We have people using the Daytona all the time for training. Each of our tires have been designed for a purpose but at this time, we don't have a racing tire only commuter tires (short distances, slower speeds). Because of your weight you will experience more flats and all I can suggest is is to use something like the Schwalbe Marathon. By the way, any other tire than a racing tire will slow you down, but then the faster the tire, the more likely a flat.
Thanks
Hugh

Question: Message: I have ordered previously and I am very happy with all of the items I have ordered. Now, I am preparing to buy a Sarthe By LeMond and the tires on this bike are listed as "Bontrager Race Lite 700x23c, folding." What tires would be the best to order to replace these? I will be doing much city and 'side of the road' riding with this particular bicycle. I would like the best quality styles you offer. Thanks for your help!

Answer:

Dear John,
I looked in the database and don't have the measurements for the Race Lite Rim which is on the wheel. My guess is that the Daytona will fit, but once you get the bike, I would appreciate knowing how wide the rim is on the inside so I put that in our database. There are a lot of bikes with that wheel so knowing the measurments would help us a lot. Sorry I can't be more specific but having worked with a lot of Lemond bike owners, all the rims are thin so the 7800 x 20 we have will be your best choice.
thanks
Hugh

Question: Message: Hello Hugh, I am a very happy customer of yours and when I placed a order for more tires you asked for a measurement on the wheels of a new bike I bought so you could add it to your database,as it is a very popular wheel. Well here we go: Lemond Sarthe (Also, Lemond makes several bikes using the same wheels), The wheel is a 'Bontrager Race' The tires that came with the bike were (((700x23))) The INSIDE size of the wheel is (((18/32"))) I hope this is helpful, and again, keep up the awesome work! Wheel System : Bontrager Race wheelsystem

Answer: Dear John,
thank you very much for the measurements.  This will help customers find out if tires will fit their bikes many many times to come.
Again thanks
Hugh

Question: Message: I am writing to you because I have managed to salvage the tires that I received from you that came on the fixed hubs.Had I known that the hubs were not of the split variety I would have only ordered the tires by themselves.I am going to call the bank that I deal with and inform them that I no longer wish to proceed with any claim because I got the tires and I was able to use them. What I had to do in order to be able to use the tires was to remove them from the fixed hubs that they were shipped to me on then simply mount them on the split hubs that originally came with my drain machine. The tires are in perfect condition and I am very happy with them now.I am not going to disclose how it was that I was able to remove the tires from the fixed hubs because I will not be held responsible should anyone else attempt to remove any tires from any fixed hubs and damage the tires in the process using the method that I employed in removing the tires that were sent to me on fixed hubs. Respectfully Yours,Nelson
