Wheelchair Tire Installation
Easier than you might think !

Installation of your new Air Free tires is quick and easy. We recommend that you purchase the Air Free installation tool to make your installation pleasurable. The first thing you will need to do is to make sure that your new tires will indeed fit. Please check for rim compatibility by using our tire sizing section.

We recommend getting the Tool Bar installation tool
use on 8"and 24" airless tires

Tips for easy installation:
  • Use liquid hand soap around the inside of the tire
  • Tie the tire to the rim in two places two inches apart before using the tool
  • Gently warm the tire up if it is a stubborn one by tossing the tire into the hot tub, warm bath or hot pavement. Please do not bake your tire in the oven.
  • The tire will appear to be visibly smaller than the rim but rest assured that the tire will stretch. If you didn't get the tool, you are in for a work out.
General Information:
  • Check your rim for any loose spokes before installing the tires
  • Make sure the tire is properly seated and visually inspect the tire before using
  • The tire will appear shiny at first due to the mold release agent that we use. It will quickly wear off with riding. You can hasten the process by using Simple Green or similar product.
  • Call us if you have any questions or concerns

Very Important
Wheelchair tires can be installed with either our "Tool Bar" or our "Vice Tool" or "Bicycle Tire Tool". The vice tool needs a bench press to work and is the easier of the three methods to install. Almost all of our wheelchair tires can be installed with the tool bar and all can be installed using the vice tool. We list with each tire the most appropriate tool option.

Almost as Important
Warming any of our tires gently will help no matter how you choose to install our tires. A little liquid hand soap around the rim helps AND make sure the tire can slide as it is stretched. Only tie the tire off in one place. Be patient and know that almost no one has ever sent our tires back because they couldn't get them on. Always make sure you have a second person to assist.

One More Thing
Whichever tool you decide to use, the process is the same. The tire has to be worked on and over the rim. When using the Tool Bar, just work two inches at a time. Keep your tools soft and plastic for best results. If you use WD40 then you need to clean it up good with soap. Silicone spray is more desirable.
