Bicycle Tire Installation
Easier than you might think !

Installation of your new Air Free tires is quick and easy. We recommend that you purchase or rent the Air Free installation tool to make your installation pleasurable. Buy the Tool

The first thing you will need to do is to make sure that your new tires will indeed fit. Please check for rim compatibility by using our tire sizing section.

Step1 Carefully uninstall your old tires. The brake cable will more than likely need to be loosened. Clean around the rim and remove the rubber strip. Seat the Air Free tire on to and in the rim and tie a stout cord or cable tie around the tire and the rim. Place the tire and rim on the ground with tire on the side facing away from you.

Step 2 After making sure the tire and the rim are tightly bound by the cord or the cable tie, place the slotted end of the aluminum bar over the axle. Loosen the bolt just enough to allow free movement of the bar. Position the tool shoe on to the bar and slide it down the bar until it engages the rim. Check to make sure that the lip of the mounting shoe is resting in the rims' edge. Rotate the tool away from you for one quarter the distance around the tire. At this point resistance will be felt.

Step 3 Once the tire and rim become engaged and resistance is felt, reaffirm your grip on the tire and wheel. Smoothly push the bar away from you in small increments. Repeat this process until the tire snaps in to place. It is during the last one third of the process that the most resistance will be felt. Please do not feel compelled to rush this process.  Keep the bar as parallel as possible to the rim.

Step 4 Once the tire has snapped in to place on the rim, remove the mounting shoe and cut the cord that held the tire in place. Repeat these steps for the next tire. Carefully install your wheels back on to the bicycle and align them properly. Check your brake cables and tighten them. You should check the spokes for trueness. Installation of the Air Free tires will not affect the wheels' trueness, however this is a good opportunity to perform routine maintenance on your bicycle.

Tips for easy installation:
  • Use liquid hand soap around the inside of the tire (no petroleum products)
  • Tie the tire to the rim in two places two inches apart before using the tool
  • Gently warm the tire up if it is a stubborn one by tossing the tire into the hot tub, warm bath or hot pavement. Please do not bake your tire in the oven.
  • When attempting to seat the tire into the rim, please be aware that some tires may appear to be too fat to fit into your rim but if you stretch the tire around the rim first then the tire will decrease in width slightly and the tire will want to seat itself at that point.
  • The tire will appear to be visibly smaller than the rim but rest assured that the tire will stretch. If you didn't get the tool, you are in for a work out.
  • If your axle is too big for the tool, you can drill a larger hole in the bottom of the tool.
General Information:
  • Check your rim for any loose spokes before installing the tires
  • Make sure the tire is properly seated and visually inspect the tire before riding
  • The tire will appear shiny at first due to the mold release agent that we use. It will quickly wear off with riding. You can hasten the process by using Simple Green or similar product.
  • Call us if you have any questions or concerns

Important   slideshow
Not all of our bicycle tires require the large installation tool. Some of tires can installed with a small spatula like device we offer called an "Install Paddle" and some tires can be installed with just plain old plastic tire levers. We list with each tire the appropriate tool so that you get the right tool for the tire.

Almost as Important
Warming any of our tires gently will help no matter how you choose to install our tires. A little liquid hand soap around the rim helps AND make sure the tire can slide as it is stretched. Only tie the tire off in one place. Be patient and know that almost no one has ever sent our tires back because they couldn't get them on.

One More Thing
Whichever tool you decide to use, the process is the same. The tire has to be worked on and over the rim. When using the paddle, just work two inches at a time. When using tire levers, use three or four of them and "walk" the tire on. Using screwdrivers is only asking for trouble. Keep your tools soft and plastic for best results.
